I’m not attempting to brag or boast here, but when you put the causes and conditions into place, the results typically follow. And this can be true for conducting powerful healing work as well – when we work on ourselves, learn multiple techniques and modalities which lead to actual, lasting transformation, then it would follow that we could produce powerful healing sessions when we work with others.

And this is starting to happen with me. I won’t say too much, as it is my intention to walk the fine line between being modest and looking to promote my work.

I have been practicing Craniosacral Therapy since 2005, Polyvagal Therapy since 2012, Birth Process work since 2013 and other modalities as well – including Acupressure, Shiatsu, and a potent and effective Hot Stone massage treatment. Oh and I am starting to learn Sports Massage along with a number of other massage techniques.

But it might be time to specialize. And I know upon what I want to focus!

This might be a good time to take a few mindful, rejuvenating deep breaths… as I’m about to plunge into heavier waters.

This is what it all boils down to (hear me out: subtext read to the bottom of the post): when we have unmet needs, early conflicts (double binds) and unresolved psychological wounds, then we have shadow material. This makes sense – nearly everyone has some unresolved stuff – meaning everyone has shadow material. This can show up as blind spots, uncomfortable subjects, or meeting people who really hook and irritate us just by being themselves, certain emotions being very difficult to express, etc.

With this shadow material comes a lot of psychic energy required to keep it contained. Most of us want to appear normal, we want to assure our friends and family that everything is fine. So we become extremely skilled at containing, deflecting or suppressing our shadow material. And this requires large amounts of psychic energy! Huge resources are going into the darker nether regions of our psyche to keep our fears, terrors and even misunderstandings at bay. (Some of those fears though may just be illusions or confusions – they might be easier to remedy than you think!) Hence is it is easier to contain and deal with our subconscious underworld when we are younger – we have more psychic energy in our 20’s than we do in our 40’s!

As we get older however, these reservoirs of psychic energy start to decline. And then the compensation for our shadow material becomes harder and harder. Some of it starts to bleed over into our daily conscious lives – maybe we become more irritable without meaning to, maybe our anxiety is now impossible to hide, maybe we start having nightmare problems, perhaps we stick our foot in our mouths with more regularity – we become more raw, etc. And this is why many diseases start to show up around age 40 – especially those funny idiopathic diseases that the medical community cannot pinpoint the cause of. Can you image a Western doctor saying, “Oh your royal chi is declining which is allowing your skeletons out of the closet. That’s why you are sick…” That’d go over well! I can say more about this at another time – or better yet, sign up for one of my classes or webinars.

Kathy Kain – one of my teachers of Polyvagal therapy – says about the above topic: “moving toward equilibrium, it becomes easier to sustain healthy self-regulation… energy is no longer spent maintaining disequilibrium which allows us to focus on [healthy] other functions.” ~in her paper entitled Touching Trauma.

The healing facilitation work that I offer looks to gradually get to the root of the problem. And therefore this is slow patience-requiring work. But by going slower, we get to our destination faster (truly transforming suffering and getting to the root cause of illness). Do not expect instant results – you wouldn’t want that anyway (can you imagine a nervous system that took 40 years to get to where it is now, to shift radically in two weeks? No? I can’t either…) 🙂 But after 5, 7 or 10 treatments, you will definitely notice lasting results, greater insights and liberated shadow material. See the last few paragraphs!

We work with psychological double binds from the early pre-verbal stage of life, where we are literally building a body around whatever we encounter (if we are born in a tension field, then it would make sense that we take that tension into our bodies and get fooled into thinking that that is the only choice we have!! Ouch!). This is extremely powerful work. It is not for everyone. But someone who wants to do their healing work, who wants to transform for the better, who is willing to be uncomfortable for a few days while their body starts to transform (we can literally re-orient our brains and nervous systems by doing this work).

We walk the fine line between healthy self-regulation and activation as we repattern it – Ray Castellino, a pioneer in the Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Trauma resolution fields and founder of BEBA – building and enhancing bonding and attachment, calls this fine line, the Leading Edge – where we stretch ourselves as we build resiliency and restore healthy responses to stress.

You have to have good support. That is pre-requisite. Asking for help is one of the traits of a grown up. As a healing facilitator I want to be part of your health team – I want to be one of several people supporting you (I don’t want to do it alone). I will ask you about the support in your life – friends, family but more importantly counselors, health care providers, people you can really go to with your issues and be heard.

The benefits of liberating this shadow material are immense. When you were conceived, there was an initial blueprint of who you are / were meant to be. But then various imprints (misunderstandings, unmet needs, unresolved wounds) covered that up – obscured your highest potential. This work seeks to reconnect you to your original blueprint, gradually. By liberating your shadow material, you also simultaneously liberate the psychic energy that was required to keep it tamped down, suppressed, contained. And guess what? When you have all this psychic energy freed up, you become more spontaneous, more creative, more joyful, more resilient, clearer and having a sharper mind. Who doesn’t want that?

Oh and it might also have health ramifications – in Chinese medicine and other complimentary medicine theories, emotions play a major role in disease (especially unconscious, repressed, tangled emotions). The A.C.E. study has shown enormous levels of correlation when it comes to early trauma leading to adult (inflammatory) disease. What happens when we resolve and repair these early unmet needs and repair and resolve the trauma? It would make sense to assume then the idiopathic (unknown causes of) inflammation would also go down! And this is another reason why this work takes time – true, lasting, joyous transformation takes time but it is well worth it!

The brief uncomfortable journey is well worth it in the end! The key is getting beyond that typical Western saying of, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” I would change it to, “If I can transform it for the better, what am I waiting for?!”

Sometimes we want to keep things just the way they are.  Am I right?  Who adores change and welcomes it every moment?  Not I.

Well, Uranus says life is impermanent.  But occasionally change is for the better (whether we can see it at the moment or not).  Might as well start to view things like birth, old age, sickness and death as typical!  And this can apply to inner patterns as well – a new pattern is conceived in the mind, we put time and energy into that pattern (or behavior or habit, etc), the pattern might not be entirely healthy, and it causes us to question or doubt our choices.  So maybe we are forced to choose between health or continuing that pattern.  If we continue for long enough, we might even have the choice of an early death or choosing to let the pattern die.  (Wow this is getting morbid…)

I am observing a situation like this in my own chart.  Uranus is in Aries, opposite my Libra Moon / Pluto conjunction (my Hades Moon in Libra).

What does Libra Moon typically mean?  That we might hide any common daily anger and irritation under layers of charming guile and desire for ultimate harmony.  Libra Moon loves aesthetic harmony as well – it might lead to being a good artist or designer or communicator, mediator, diplomat, etc.  Libra Moon people often like the delicate, fine detail type of jobs like creating art, fashion design, editing (esp. if Virgo is thrown in), writing, and in addition, Libra Moon is often a good match maker as they are aware of subtle nuances in people’s personalities.  Oh – Libra rules the hands and it is one of the more delicate signs – so Libra Moon people rarely ever like to get their hands dirty.  (There have to be other influences like Virgo or Taurus or Capricorn or desperation for them to consider putting their hands in the dirt or doing a gritty blue collar job.)  These are just a few of Libra’s gifts and challenges.

Having Pluto conjunct a Libra Moon adds layers of exaggeration to these traits above and it implies that this individual (me) has a strong karmic tie with their mother (Moon = Mom influences, Pluto and Saturn are the two Lords of Karma).  In addition, Pluto might add a level of psychic ability or at least intuition by being conjunct the Moon.  There will be added emotionality (although Libra wants to keep this in check) which might come out by being a great writer or poet.  There is the possibility of innate emotional intelligence and understanding.  Plus due to Pluto’s influence, there will be the desire to constantly improve the self (which at times might get out of hand and prevent the individual from having fun and losing control).  Oh – did I mention Libra (thru Saturn’s influence) loves to be in control – at least of themselves?

So how does Uranus get involved?  And why would I call it the liberator?  These are good questions!

As Uranus has stationed from direct to retrograde within a degree of opposition of my Libra Hades Moon, I have noticed many subtle shifts occurring.  And these shifts could easily be manifesting due to situations that are occurring in my life.  Therefore I am not saying that astrology impels actions, rather it reflects what is happening in our lives.  Maybe one could say that astrology (as representing gross levels of karma) will show that we have the greatest proclivity towards.

So Uranus opposite Libra Hades Moon: for one, Uranus opposite the Moon can indicate perversion.  And this has crept into my life very slowly and subtly.  Due to working full time, and going to school, and being under pressure to perform due to nursing school’s strict rules, I just thought that my dismissing of the small rules at work was just a little burn out happening.  I thought that my small expressions of irritation and discontent were because I had no more energy to hold them in any longer (see above for why).  But these could both be “explained” by Uranus opposite Moon / Pluto.  Uranus opposite Pluto is never given a good prognosis in astrology books, but I might disagree.

Uranus opposite Pluto will mean that you had better be doing some inner personal growth work and especially you need a healthy outlet for any suppressed anger / resentment / hatred.  My outlet is to receive body work and do meditation – I need both.  If I just meditated, that would lead to being centered in my mind, but the body work accelerates the process of letting the angst out of my physical system.

If we do not have a healthy outlet for Pluto’s angst, then Uranus opposite Pluto will be challenging and it will feel like we are banging our heads against the wall.  However, when we have a number of inner resources to understand our inner processes and when we start to liberate our anger and irritation appropriately, then people around us start to respect us more (as we respect ourselves more).

I have a bit of a devil-may-care attitude at times and I am okay with that.  Keep in mind that astrology allows us to see the ways that we might subconsciously be working against ourselves.  I have less filters on my thoughts and words these days but I am consciously applying some filters because I don’t want to push to much and risk my job!  Or risk losing colleagues as amiable acquaintances.  I do feel more liberated though – if something upsets me, I take a couple of deep breaths and then I set the intention to be clear, compassionate and honest in my discussion and then I talk to the person about the situation.  No need to be holding that crap in!

Also, another facet of Uranus sitting at 20 degrees of Aries for 4 months…  And being opposite my Hades Moon is that I am becoming more clumsy!  This I do not like.  But, even this can be viewed as becoming liberated.  If I consider the fact that my extremely agility and dexterity were due to my not wanting to step wrong around an angry father – I walked very carefully on egg shells (without knowing it consciously), then my brain is starting to no longer compensate for that ugly cause of dexterity.  Therefore, these days, I have to be more conscious where I put my feet, how I serve a drink at work (I’m a waiter after all – which requires decent dexterity every day!), walking through my house…

Just to clarify – when I was young, my father was angry and emotionally numb and unavailable.  However, in the past 30 years he has mellowed out a bit and made huge strides toward connecting with people (and me) and I love him dearly.  I cannot repay my parent’s kindness enough for bringing me into this world.  But I am going to be honest of developmental trauma when it happens (even to me).

So as you can see, Uranus liberates on many levels and it often does it without our consent.  But from a big picture perspective, who wouldn’t want that anyway?  🙂

Thank you for reading!

So yesterday I said I would blog every day for the next month…  Not sure if I will be able to keep up that pace, AND I’m not sure you will be wanting to read what I have to say…  but here goes nothing:

Authentic practice –

Old shadowy fears,

Sleek, seductive, less-than-healthy patterns,

Little maggots of attachment and aversion,

Crawling, pushing, being forced out,

no longer permitted the job of veiling the central channel,

At the surface, tiny insects of hatred and lust,

Liquify, melt, start to pool,

Ancient beads of karmic sweat,

Drip, drip…

Aaahhhhhh…

To be clear regarding this topic, in psychological astrology we can talk about the “shadow of Gemini” or “Scorpio’s shadow.”  And if I were talking in that regard, I would be referring to the way in which those signs can work against ourselves – shadowy, unconscious material as it were.  In this case though, I am referring to an actual “thing.”  And yes, “thing” is a technical term.  🙂

When a planet goes retrograde, the point at which it seems to “pause” in the sky is known as its shadow.  For instance, (because we are talking about this planet) Venus went retrograde back in December at 29 degrees of Capricorn.  That is the furthest forward it had gotten before turning retrograde.  Following me so far?  So Venus’ shadow is presently at 29 degrees of Capricorn, considering as I write this, Venus is completing its retrograde cycle at 13 degrees Capricorn.

Here is the thing which any non-astrologer (and probably some astrologers may not either) does not know.  When Venus (or any planet for that matter) goes direct, the shadow will still be “in effect” for a short period of time thereafter.  This is why one of my astrology teachers used to preach that the retrograde cycle lasts at least two weeks after the planet starts moving forward (and I’m beginning to think he knew what he was talking about!)   🙂

So when does the shadow stop being in effect?  When the planet crosses its shadow.  So for Venus, it will officially be out of retrograde (meaning it is stationing direct and moving forward for the next 18 months or so) after January 31st.  But on that day, it will be at 13 degrees of Capricorn.  It will still have four plus weeks before it will cross its shadow.  Meaning, and I will say more, if 29 degrees of Capricorn is significant in your chart (and you would know this fact already because Venus stationed retrograde at that point, and that shadow point has been in effect since December 20th, 2013), that you may not be completely in the clear until February 28th or so.  Sorry if I’m bursting any bubbles…

If you want to know the exact day, Venus will not cross 29 degrees of Capricorn until March 5th.  So that is a good long time to slowly start to creep forward and finally it will start moving at a decent clip in the middle of February, and it will cross its shadow officially ending this retrograde cycle for 2014 (for Venus).

Here are some examples, just to be more clear.  Let us say that you have Mars at 29 degrees of Libra in your Natal Chart.  Normally, when Venus is moving at its usual, quick pace, Venus would transit your Natal Mars in two or three days tops.  It would be at 27 degrees of a Cardinal sign one day, at 29 degrees the next and then it would be moving on into the next Fixed sign.  And you would feel the reflected emotional intensity for only two to threes (normally!).  But here, the retrograde cycle would draw that out for at least six weeks, and maybe longer.

Continuing where I left off, that means that around December 20th of this past year, Venus paused at the point squaring your Mars (29 Capricorn) for a solid two to three weeks due to the retrograde process.  So you may have had a hot and steamy holidays there (or you may have wished you had someone to have a hot and steamy celebration with when those two planets meet up!).  AND…  due to Venus’ shadow sitting at the square point to your Mars, guess what?  There would be a subtle hint of that intense attraction and magnetic sexual energy off and on over the past month or so – even when Venus itself backed up away from the square point.  Does that make sense?  I hope so.  Venus and Mars, when a square happens, can be touchy bedfellows – generally speaking when Venus transits Natal Mars, it is easier, but sometimes arguments and emotionality can arise.  There will be some heightened erotic energy, but at times it can be a little juvenile – meaning, “I want what I want damn it and why can’t I have that!!!”  So hopefully if this is happening to you, you and your partner will be on similar pages and then you can have a healthy outlet for this energy!

Basically what I am trying to say is this: look at your Natal Chart.  Do you have any planets in the 27 – 30 degree mark of Cardinal signs AND / OR do you have any planets in the 1 – 3 degree point of Fixed signs?  Cardinals are Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn and Fixed signs are Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius.  These planets would all be affected by Venus’ shadow sitting at its present location, AND that might explain the up and down Venusian energy you have been feeling over the past month despite the fact that you don’t actually see much happening in your chart.  That’s because the shadow in a inferred point (there is no shadow in the sky where the planet went retrograde)   🙂

Now this same thing is true for any other planet.  If you have Neptune at 29 degrees of Aries, then lookout – you have probably had rose-colored glasses on for the past few weeks  🙂   And there could be a disillusionment heading your way!  If you have Uranus at 29 degrees of Cancer, this could also throw a fun, exciting, but not-long-lasting wrench in the relationship works especially if  you are starting a new relationship since December 10th or more recently (because then you’d have Venus in opposition to Uranus influencing your desires for six to eight weeks).  And the same is also true for Jupiter at 29 degrees of a Cardinal sign, Pluto and Saturn.  And yes, I did just throw Jupiter in that mix.

Even the great Benefic Jupiter can bring difficulty (imagine too much abundance, too much indulgence and / or too much hedonism – then you are getting close to what might be arising here).  You will definitely enjoy the time with Venus in continuous or shadowy aspect to Jupiter for eight weeks, but afterward you might say to yourself, “Well shucks, that was fun, but I may have wasted some time there…”   🙂

So good luck deciphering this and hopefully it brings a touch more clarity to the subject of Venus retrograde.  I have been noticing it myself as I have a planet at 29 degrees of a Cardinal sign.  So I stand behind these words.  I would love to hear your comments.  And thank you for reading.

A post about healthy lifestyle, diet  and the little things we can do to stay healthy.  By the way (my disclaimer), I do not claim to prevent, cure, treat or diagnose any disease – rather this blog is purely informational or for entertainment purposes, and it represents a non-licensed-medical-practitioner opinion.  With that said however, health, diet and wellness have been my hobbies since 1999, so…

In 2002, when I had a little out-of-body, near-death-experience while on the operating table having my appendix removed, I started to realize that I was just a touch different than the average American male. It only took three or four years to make the changes which the Universe immediately began to show as being necessary (I am also very stubborn). But I began to make little tiny changes in my diet and in my lifestyle choices which were suggested to me by friends and co-workers and healing facilitators, etc. And I am still doing most of these to this day.

I think I am mostly a spiritual being having a human experience. Of course I am an ordinary human being, but the pursuit of increased consciousness is important to me. Therefore, obviously I am a touch different from the average American male. So if you feel that you might be a slightly higher frequency being (one who seeks to transform their consciousness for the better, someone who is trying to stay on a spiritual path, someone who meditates regularly, or someone who takes responsibility for mistakes, etc), male or female, then these suggestions might benefit you. With that said, you don’t have to listen to any of these items, and of course, if you do, consult your doctor before changing your lifestyle / diet.

So here are some suggestions of little changes you can make to your life which I believe will slowly improve the body / mind system. I do not believe we can really separate the body from the mind – for if the body is stressed, how can the mind relax? (Unless you are a sublime being… but for the rest of us…) And likewise, if the mind is stressed, does the body relax?

Generally it takes months and / or years to make significant changes. So please don’t beat yourself up if you do all the “no-no’s” on this list. Rather, slowly (maybe change one item every few months) make a healthier choice. Please do be gentle. We all start out at different levels and with varying degrees of discipline. So for goodness sake, don’t be harsh toward yourself just because you have limits! Rather, be kind.

The list of slight changes for a healthy body:

Rather than big name brand toothpastes, use a non-fluoride toothpaste. There are many to choose from. So you can still get your flavor, or your level of abrasiveness, etc.

While I am on this subject, if possible, filter your tap water. It seems strange that low levels of arsenic / lead / mercury, and not to mention chlorine and fluoride are allowed in to our drinking water. You want to filter out the larger chemicals while keeping in some of the minerals. For instance, drinking distilled water can rob the body of some of the necessary minerals it might need.

If you have mercury amalgam dental fillings (the silver which is actually mercury ++ in your teeth), when you have the financial ability, have those fillings replaced with less-toxic resin fillings. And only go to see a dentist who knows what they are doing around this – not all dentists are created equal. There is special equipment for the removal of mercury, which begs the question of, “how is the mercury non-toxic in my teeth, but when you go to have it removed, they must install a special mercury-catcher to prevent any from being swallowed?” Huh? [Hopefully the ADA does not flip out upon reading this… purely informational! Please seek out and ask an expert before making any changes. I’m not responsible for anyone changing their lifestyle without consulting a licensed practitioner.]

Avoid antiperspirants that contain aluminum. If unable to do so, then only use it on a really busy / hot / high-pressure day.

Use eco-friendly laundry detergent. Having used non-abrasive detergents for several years now, if a friend happens to wash something of mine and they use a major name brand detergent, or some other chemical laden cleanser, my skin itches and I can smell the chemicals out-gassing from the fabric. Yuck! (And if this happens to be something I am trying to sleep in or on… good luck sleeping that night!)

When the weather turns cooler, brewing your own Kombucha might be in order. Kombucha is warming though, so it might be best to avoid drinking it during the hot summer months when the body would rather have cooling foods / drinks. See one of my previous posts about brewing Kombucha.

Avoid partially hydrogenated oils / fats. That means avoid some commercial, big name nut butters (peanut butter that has these PH oils seem more like wax or plastic than food to me). And palm oil is not much better – if possible, go for peanuts only peanut butter, which means you will have to stir it up as the oil separates. Also true for cashew butter, almost butter, sunflower seed butter, etc.

And remember, please speak with a licensed practitioner about all these things. I am not responsible for any adverse reactions to changes made in anyone else’ lifestyle or body.

And the final suggestion for food changes – dump as many processed carb foods that you can, including cereals, big-name-brand breakfast bars, etc and especially avoid foods containing high fructose corn syrup as you don’t know if that corn was genetically altered (further adding confusion to the body’s digestion) and no matter what, it will wreak havoc on your blood sugar. Best to avoid those spikes and crashes I say. Better to eat whole grains, cook your own rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, barley, whole grain pasta, etc.

Rather than using pharmaceutical drugs, whether prescription or over the counter, try using homeopathic medicine (seeing a homeopathic MD is best for this), or perhaps try flower essences / essential oils (maybe a Naturopathic Doctor would be best for these, or an alternative minded Registered Dietician). For instance, Arnica (homeopathic) is a good replacement of over the counter pain relievers and it is definitely less stressful on the liver.

There are many good herbs which help us to relax and / or go to sleep. And if we are stressed or traumatized (or near the verge of going into shock), then having Rescue Remedy around (flower essence blend) is very beneficial and it works wonders! Talk to an alternative health practitioner, and preferably one who is licensed about these.

And remember, find a quality health care practitioner who you trust, and ask them about any of these suggestions. Then go out and get a second opinion! You can also go to Dr. Mercola’s website to investigate health rumors and other dietary suggestions. That would be http://www.mercola.com

See also Terri Saunder’s website – Sunrise Herb Shoppe from my blog list on the RIGHT and you can read many of her well-researched articles on these subjects and more.

Progressed Moon in the 6th House

This is a post about a topic within Western Astrology, and as a result, I am writing for people who have a limited to moderate understanding of Western Astrology. Without such a background, you will still get something out of reading this, but you may not grok the slightly technical language. Specifically this post is about the Progressed Moon, which moves through the chart at approximately one degree per month, meaning it is in an Astrological House for an average of 26 – 30 months. Therefore we have small two plus year cycles as the Progressed Moon moves from sign to sign and from house to house.

The sign does make a difference. However, some of what I am about to describe will pertain to anyone’s Pr. Moon in the 6th House, no matter what sign it is in. There will be a recognizable difference though between a Pr. Moon in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) which resonates with the earthy 6th house, versus being in a less grounded sign like Pisces, Sagittarius or Gemini for instance.

So what does the Pr. Moon in the 6th house mean? Remember the Pr. Moon will be in the 6th house for at least two years and possibly closer to three years. It is a time of preparation. It is a time of completion. It is a time of increased self-discipline. And it is a time to relish resting in the discomfort of appropriate growth. In the following paragraphs, I will unpack each of these concepts further. A) Preparation, B) Completion, C) Self-discipline, and D) the Discomfort of Appropriate Growth.

It turns out that A) and C) go quite well together, and while we are at it, we should probably throw D) in that same mix as well. What do I mean? Well think about the Astrology Chart from a larger perspective. The 1st house through the 5th house reflects a time (or essence or energy) of Self-Orientation. And then, the 7th through 11th houses have to do with a more public, other-orientation if not community-oriented perspective (or energy or essence).

So where do we transition from a Self-Oriented perspective to a more community / other / public perspective? Well of course, the House of Bridging-Consciousness, and Maturity, and Discipline: the 6th house.

And then we can also take a more focused glimpse of the Astrology Chart, and compare the 5th house with the 7th house. Because, like it or not, the 6th house is intimately connected to both of these fun-loving houses. Unfortunately, in order to get from the 5th house to the 7th house, we must go through some significant changes… Ugh! Right?!

[By the way, the following description of the 5th and 7th houses, along with the succeeding discussion on Neptune, is overly simplified and drastically exaggerated to make a point. In reality, Western Astrology is a very complex subject and you should investigate it thoroughly if you are interested. Please don’t read this post out of the context of the larger astrological understanding and start making judgments about Astrology, your chart or others’ charts.]

The 5th house is the house of FUN. It represents Creativity – Artistic, Theatrical, along with Procreation (it is the house of children nonetheless – and making children can definitely be fun!). The 5th house also has to do with Gambling or Speculation – Love Affairs, that is the early stages of a romantic relationship; Having Children, as we never quite know to whom we are going to give birth; and of course Taking Risks – gambling with our body or with our money (or emotions), it all falls under this house’s influence. Basically the 5th house is the house of partying and living it up. It represents some of the best traits of Leo (fun-loving fire). The 5th house, like the lower frequencies of Leo, can be a very Self-Oriented house – how much money can “I” make with this risk? This love affair is fun (for me)! “I” am going to stay with it. But if it gets serious or dry, responsible and deeply-committed, forget it!

Then we have the 7th house, which, in some ways, is a polar opposite of the 5th. The 7th house is the house of Compromise, Union, Negotiation and being a mature, participating partner in a dyad (Partnering). Many astrologers, both traditional and contemporary call this the House of Marriage, with good reason. Because maintaining a marriage takes work (not that I know from personal experience, but I have closely observed healthy marriages – and they do not appear to be all ease and grace!), it takes maturity and the humility to admit that we make mistakes and taking responsibility – all the stuff the childish 5th house type detests! Making repair is a part of living. Expressing your boundaries is necessary in a healthy relationship, and when they are violated, repair is necessary!

So how do we get from this adolescent 5th house to the mature, responsible, vow-taking 7th? Well, yet again, I don’t have to tell you – we go through the nitty gritty process of growth and maturation in the 6th house. And when I say that you need to get used to the discomfort of growth, you may want to pay attention. And not only get used to, rather, we must start to relish the discomfort, sit in the flames of wisdom fire and allow the Creative to shape and mold us into a mature, responsible (hopefully wiser) being.

Refining is a good word to describe what is happening to the soul during this period, but I feel it is too graceful or soft a word to touch on the depth of angst and the death-struggle of wrestling with our ego that is possible when the Progressed Moon tenants the 6th house. And it needs to be intense to kick us out of our old, childish habits.

That is why people talk about the 6th house in a slightly dry or possibly dreadful way. It is not a bad thing to grow, but it is rarely ever comfortable! And if it is, either you started with incredibly positive karma or you are grossly deceiving yourself, and as a result you are setting yourself up for a series of nasty disillusionments as we speak. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…) But in reality, becoming more responsible, more reliable, more attentive to details and more mature are never bad traits. It just depends on where we are starting from as to how difficult a journey it is.

If we are younger when the Pr. Moon enters the 6th house, say between 18 and 30, then this could be the time of preparation for our first serious committed emotional / romantic relationship (or possibly our first and hopefully only marriage). And many of us are not that aware of who we truly are at this point, which means there might be additional relationships coming up in the future. But, if we seek out and listen to the advice which is readily available when the Pr. Moon is in the 6th house, then we have a chance to grow in many positive directions.

Comprehensive Natal Chart Interpretation

Kirby will spend 90 minutes interpreting your Natal Birth chart. You can chat about any area that you like. This includes printed charts and it also includes about 30 minutes of preparation time! These are typically done on the phone, via Skype or in person if you happen to be in Virginia, USA.

If we are more Neptunian types (lots of planets in Pisces, or in the 12th house, or if Neptune is making Hard Aspects to the natal Sun, Moon or Mercury), then the journey to become Grounded, Responsible, Reliable, and Mature in a worldly (positive connotation) sort of way will be more difficult. Because which planet detests being structured and contained? Think the foggy, watery essence of Neptune – it is the one planet that prefers to be in any other Creative World besides this one. Not to leave you Neptunian types in a lurch, I myself have heavy Neptune aspects (and Pisces Sun) in my chart, and through diligent work and with alert / relaxed awareness, one can become more embodied in the present, and more grounded in the world. It is possible! (See my previous posts for more.) But don’t expect it to magically happen on its own – you must put some effort into grounding and do your personal growth work, as no one else can do it for you.

Therefore, before we try to decipher what the Pr. Moon in the 6th house will mean, we must discern where we are coming from. How attached are we to our “me-first” ego (5th house)? Are relationships easier for us – can we be practical and express our needs with ease within them (some of the best traits of the 7th house)? Are we more at home in a creative timeless possibly substance filled evening (Neptune) or are we naturally more practical and responsible? And don’t get me wrong – there are people who need to get more in touch with their Neptunian sides (emotional intelligence, creativity, intuition, psychic abilities, compassion, empathy, etc). But there are people who err on the side of all of the above traits and who seem to be light-years away from pragmatic conduct. So discover who you are, where you are on your path, and then start to peel away the layers of the Progressed Chart and its interpretations.

[Edited Nov 2017: Reading through this post, I wonder how I did not mention the following about the Progressed Moon in the 6th house: if there is one Astrological house where you will clean up your act as it were, become more active in your lifestyle – go to the gym, start hiking, join a biking club, pick up that river kayak that has been sitting in your shed for 5 years, etc; this is a time when you will probably clean up your diet – you might start reading books on healthy bioflora, you might do a specific diet, but you will probably be more aware that you want to tidy up your eating habits, and you may even do a cleanse (see my posts about this topic however); and you might also add some other healthy habits of self-care during this time – maybe you will pick up yoga, qigong, tai chi, martial arts, walking daily, receiving a monthly massage or bodywork session etc. It is a time of moving toward health when Progressed Moon (or Sun or Mercury) pass through this area of the chart.]

I believe the astrological chart (the Natal Chart, the Birth Horoscope, etc) to be a snapshot of our gross karmas, at least in a nutshell. What do I mean? If you believe in reincarnation, great, if not, can you just pretend for a second? So we have past lives. Say there is unfinished business with other people, animals, enemies, locations, etc. And there is unfinished business with regard to our strong habits and predispositions. There may also be unfinished business with regard to certain cultures and belief systems. This all shows up in the birth chart. We reincarnate to clean up these various situations and strong inclinations, if they need to be cleaned up of course. If not, then we reincarnate to benefit others, which is not such a bad thing.

For the most part, especially here in the West, just about all of us share one massive shortcoming in common. We are stuck up in our heads. Meaning we are not in our bodies – it takes effort to be aware of our tummies, to be aware of our breath. We have to purposely slow down to get in touch with our body’s needs. Why is this the case? I’m not saying we are all suffering from this affliction. Luckily, there are teachers and sublime beings who lead others back home into their bodies. But for the most part, especially in less-than-conscious families and industries, people are just running around being aware from the neck up.

Well, as babies, we emulate those around us. Studies on mirror neurons shows that kids (0 – 7 especially) do what their caretakers do. (This is why it is vital for parents to walk their talk – no saying one thing and doing another and expecting their kids to honor their words! Getting off that soapbox now…) It is natural – we want to learn from our parents and become functioning teenagers and adults. Unfortunately, if the adults we are learning from have no clue what it is to be embodied… if they are just in their heads, out of touch with their hearts and bellies, well then what chance do we have as babies?

As babies, we seek to be as safe and comfortable as possible. To do so, we emulate our parents. If our parents are living a stressed, tight, rat-race-oriented lifestyle, then as babies we learn to lock up certain parts of our body. I mean, what is the point of having an open heart if it is just going to get hurt and wounded everyday? So we start to close certain parts of our breath, we tighten our shoulders, in a sense creating a natural defense around our tender, vulnerable areas. But is this really necessary? Well, at that young impressionable age, yes. As conscious adults with choices about how we carry ourselves, how we use our tools of consciousness and awareness, NO!

In this series of posts, I intend to go into the shadow side of each planet. What does it mean to have a challenged Mercury and how does that affect embodiment? Or Mars? Or Jupiter, etc?

I will ponder this subject for a few days and then post the next article in this series.

Thanks for reading.
