I’m not attempting to brag or boast here, but when you put the causes and conditions into place, the results typically follow. And this can be true for conducting powerful healing work as well – when we work on ourselves, learn multiple techniques and modalities which lead to actual, lasting transformation, then it would follow that we could produce powerful healing sessions when we work with others.

And this is starting to happen with me. I won’t say too much, as it is my intention to walk the fine line between being modest and looking to promote my work.

I have been practicing Craniosacral Therapy since 2005, Polyvagal Therapy since 2012, Birth Process work since 2013 and other modalities as well – including Acupressure, Shiatsu, and a potent and effective Hot Stone massage treatment. Oh and I am starting to learn Sports Massage along with a number of other massage techniques.

But it might be time to specialize. And I know upon what I want to focus!

This might be a good time to take a few mindful, rejuvenating deep breaths… as I’m about to plunge into heavier waters.

This is what it all boils down to (hear me out: subtext read to the bottom of the post): when we have unmet needs, early conflicts (double binds) and unresolved psychological wounds, then we have shadow material. This makes sense – nearly everyone has some unresolved stuff – meaning everyone has shadow material. This can show up as blind spots, uncomfortable subjects, or meeting people who really hook and irritate us just by being themselves, certain emotions being very difficult to express, etc.

With this shadow material comes a lot of psychic energy required to keep it contained. Most of us want to appear normal, we want to assure our friends and family that everything is fine. So we become extremely skilled at containing, deflecting or suppressing our shadow material. And this requires large amounts of psychic energy! Huge resources are going into the darker nether regions of our psyche to keep our fears, terrors and even misunderstandings at bay. (Some of those fears though may just be illusions or confusions – they might be easier to remedy than you think!) Hence is it is easier to contain and deal with our subconscious underworld when we are younger – we have more psychic energy in our 20’s than we do in our 40’s!

As we get older however, these reservoirs of psychic energy start to decline. And then the compensation for our shadow material becomes harder and harder. Some of it starts to bleed over into our daily conscious lives – maybe we become more irritable without meaning to, maybe our anxiety is now impossible to hide, maybe we start having nightmare problems, perhaps we stick our foot in our mouths with more regularity – we become more raw, etc. And this is why many diseases start to show up around age 40 – especially those funny idiopathic diseases that the medical community cannot pinpoint the cause of. Can you image a Western doctor saying, “Oh your royal chi is declining which is allowing your skeletons out of the closet. That’s why you are sick…” That’d go over well! I can say more about this at another time – or better yet, sign up for one of my classes or webinars.

Kathy Kain – one of my teachers of Polyvagal therapy – says about the above topic: “moving toward equilibrium, it becomes easier to sustain healthy self-regulation… energy is no longer spent maintaining disequilibrium which allows us to focus on [healthy] other functions.” ~in her paper entitled Touching Trauma.

The healing facilitation work that I offer looks to gradually get to the root of the problem. And therefore this is slow patience-requiring work. But by going slower, we get to our destination faster (truly transforming suffering and getting to the root cause of illness). Do not expect instant results – you wouldn’t want that anyway (can you imagine a nervous system that took 40 years to get to where it is now, to shift radically in two weeks? No? I can’t either…) 🙂 But after 5, 7 or 10 treatments, you will definitely notice lasting results, greater insights and liberated shadow material. See the last few paragraphs!

We work with psychological double binds from the early pre-verbal stage of life, where we are literally building a body around whatever we encounter (if we are born in a tension field, then it would make sense that we take that tension into our bodies and get fooled into thinking that that is the only choice we have!! Ouch!). This is extremely powerful work. It is not for everyone. But someone who wants to do their healing work, who wants to transform for the better, who is willing to be uncomfortable for a few days while their body starts to transform (we can literally re-orient our brains and nervous systems by doing this work).

We walk the fine line between healthy self-regulation and activation as we repattern it – Ray Castellino, a pioneer in the Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Trauma resolution fields and founder of BEBA – building and enhancing bonding and attachment, calls this fine line, the Leading Edge – where we stretch ourselves as we build resiliency and restore healthy responses to stress.

You have to have good support. That is pre-requisite. Asking for help is one of the traits of a grown up. As a healing facilitator I want to be part of your health team – I want to be one of several people supporting you (I don’t want to do it alone). I will ask you about the support in your life – friends, family but more importantly counselors, health care providers, people you can really go to with your issues and be heard.

The benefits of liberating this shadow material are immense. When you were conceived, there was an initial blueprint of who you are / were meant to be. But then various imprints (misunderstandings, unmet needs, unresolved wounds) covered that up – obscured your highest potential. This work seeks to reconnect you to your original blueprint, gradually. By liberating your shadow material, you also simultaneously liberate the psychic energy that was required to keep it tamped down, suppressed, contained. And guess what? When you have all this psychic energy freed up, you become more spontaneous, more creative, more joyful, more resilient, clearer and having a sharper mind. Who doesn’t want that?

Oh and it might also have health ramifications – in Chinese medicine and other complimentary medicine theories, emotions play a major role in disease (especially unconscious, repressed, tangled emotions). The A.C.E. study has shown enormous levels of correlation when it comes to early trauma leading to adult (inflammatory) disease. What happens when we resolve and repair these early unmet needs and repair and resolve the trauma? It would make sense to assume then the idiopathic (unknown causes of) inflammation would also go down! And this is another reason why this work takes time – true, lasting, joyous transformation takes time but it is well worth it!

The brief uncomfortable journey is well worth it in the end! The key is getting beyond that typical Western saying of, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” I would change it to, “If I can transform it for the better, what am I waiting for?!”

What in the world does this title imply?  I have studied and experienced a lot of process-oriented bodywork and pre- and peri-natal psychology.  This means I am aware of many facets of my birth process and I have done some work in healing misunderstandings and resourcing wounded childhood parts of myself.  Let me explain in a little more depth.

When I was born, first I had the umbilical cord wrapped twice around my neck.  I did not need to be resuscitated but I am sure this was one birth trauma.  Second, the medical staff felt they had to use forceps to pull my head out of the birth canal.  This is another birth trauma.  And third, and possibly the most traumatizing, was that because of my Indigenous American blood, I had dark splotches on my lower back.  Well, the doctors in Hawaii had never seen anything like this before, so I was taken from my mother and placed in a NICU for at least 12 to 18 hours.  This was definitely a third birth trauma.  Research has been coming out recently about the need for babies to have skin to skin contact with mother to be psychologically resourced and to feel safe.  Because as the newborn baby orients to its world, unconsciously its nervous system is deciding: “is this world safe or do I have to struggle to survive?”  Although, let’s be honest, this unconscious decision often gets made long before the baby is born.  If the mother is struggling, or making a major move, or working in a stressful job, or dealing with stress in the relationship with the father, then those stress hormones will probably already have the baby in utero deciding that the world is not a safe place.

With this context in place, now why do I have the above title?

Because I am about to move to Florida.  This is going to be a major transition for me.  And I am now in charge.  And due to the large amount of personal growth work I have done on myself, this is the most conscious I have ever been in this lifetime.  Therefore, if I notice feelings arising with regard to this big move, I can now slow down and say, “Okay body.  I hear you.  I feel [blank].  Now what do I need to come back into alignment?”  (for instance)  Yes I have moved about a dozen times previously, but those moves were all within Central Virginia – I had friends, family, teachers and I knew the area very well.  In Florida, I have one spiritual teacher who I know well and a handful of friends and acquaintances and that is it.  I don’t know the area and I don’t have a job.  Plus I am not able to practice bodywork there until I become licensed to touch.  So this transition is huge for me!

What I am trying to say is that my upcoming move to Florida is like entering a new world.  Similarly, when I was born, it was like entering a new world.  So I am comparing and contrasting my birth with my move.  But now I am more conscious than I was as a newborn.  So I will have more choice in how ease or challenging this present transition is.

And judging from the description of my birth above, there are definitely reactive childhood parts of me still deep in my subconscious who are influencing my emotions and making their own judgments about what is going on around me.  Therefore it is my intention to do things at a manageable pace.  I am slowing down enough to stay grounded and present in my body, despite the rare days when I start to drift away.  And luckily I have set things up so that I do not have to find a job ASAP upon arriving in FL.  That would be nice, but I need for that job to be part-time or very supportive.  Too much stress and I am just repeating old lessons that lead to pain and suffering – NO THANK YOU!

With all this said, I have set certain boundaries and I intend to maintain those with regard to dates and my activities.  If I feel I need a day off, then I am taking it.  If I have a busy few days, then I would like to have the day prior to that window be slow and gentle.  I am proud of myself so far.  I have been fairly disciplined and I am noticing what is arising without too much judgment.  Yay!  <Patting myself on the back.>

Now I just have to take things one day at a time and stay relaxed and alert.  We will see if I can manage this massive transition with ease and grace.  And we will see if I can notice the reactive childhood parts of me as they raise their yellow and red flags of concern, and then I will sooth them and tuck them back in, safe and snug until I am ready to work with them (on my time of course).

Thank you for reading and wish me luck!

I finished the birth process workshop with Myrna Martin, which I would highly recommend to anyone (especially anyone with known trauma and who has done at least a little bit of work on themselves through therapy / bodywork / acupuncture / etc.  In fact, I am even applying for the upc0ming training which she will be leading starting in April!  Wow!  I did not see that coming!

However, I learned so much about what babies, fetuses and parents need, especially in that critical stage of conception to age seven, that I want to spend as much time with Myrna as possible.  She is a true gem, a gift and I’d even say, a treasure.

In the process workshop, everyone had a profound experience (I believe) and we were all in awe of how Myrna kept the process slow, contained and completely safe.  We all dropped into deeper trust and comfortable contact with each other.  And I gained incredible new insights into my personal history as a newborn (and before and after).

I am exceptionally glad I committed to doing this work!

Hello, yes, every once in a while, I will post something gratuitously commercial.  However, in this case, these books and other products which I recommend on my amazon store are awesome!

I just updated my Amazon Store to include a category on Somatic Therapy books – which should also be called books on understanding early trauma and how to heal it.  The titles do not allow for such comprehensive descriptions.  But check it out (link on the right).

For instance, the book, “Scared Sick” details an enormous peer-reviewed, empirical study done by the Kaiser Insurance group where they discovered a significant correlation between early childhood (and infant) trauma and the occurrence of inflammatory diseases later on in life.  Then the authors go on to discuss this study’s results and other strong correlations to the health impacts of early trauma.  An awesome read which I highly recommend.  And you should buy it from my Amazon store (see link to the right).

Or another great read, for anyone dedicated to healing or at least understanding their healing process is the book “Healing Developmental Trauma.”  This and other great reads are available in my store.

If you want a fascinating read about the “science” of reincarnation, read “Old Souls” by Tom Shroder (illuminating the evidence from psychiatrist Ian Stevenson).  This is on page 7 of the sublime books category in my store.  This is especially fascinating because Dr. Stevenson did most of this research while employed at the University of Virginia (a very conservative school to say the least).  It is amazing how many little alternative research projects are on-going,even in traditional, conservative establishments!

I have a private practice in Charlottesville where I offer healing facilitation including working with the polyvaggal system (healing the central nervous system), Craniosacral Biodynamics as well as offering Spiritual Astrology interpretations both in person and over the phone.

If you have any comments for my blog or my amazon store, please let me know.

More about astrology to follow very very soon!

Thanks for reading.  ~Kirby
