Hello dear readers!

This is a post about Spiritual Astrology (Yay! Finally! I have been discussing massage school a lot for the past ten weeks, and here is a post purely about an astrological concept).

I must begin with recommending that before you read on, please take several deep breaths… I want you to listen to this guided meditation to connect with your internal resources:

Having established some inner resources – specifically the Feet, Seat, Breath meditation, now it is appropriate to go on. I want people to have at least a bit of inner resources before reading on.

I had a great conversation with a gentleman from England recently and we got to talking about the Ascendant and why it has to do with new beginnings. In Timing Astrology, the Progressed chart (secondary progressions) shows how we shift and change from within. It is a very slow gradual process of growth and development which has some uncanny accuracy and parallels.

In this Progressed chat, whenever a planet is crossing the natal Ascendant, that can indicate a major shift or change is coming very soon. In fact, that is one way to rectify the birth time – if the Progressed Moon crosses the Ascendant and during that 3 month window, nothing is really shifting, there are no fresh starts, there is no impetus to make major changes, then the b/t might be off!

This is also true if the Progressed Sun crosses the Ascendant (which is much more rare than the Pr. Moon crossing it), this will also indicate large scale shifts as we move from the behind-the-scenes-psychic-dreamy-nebulous-shadowy-12th-house to the pioneering, adventuresome, more impulsive and more self-directed 1st house. In this case, the window of growth and change would easily be 3-5 years as the Pr. Sun only moves one degree per year. So again, if nothing occurred in that 3-5 year window, I would be very suspicious of that birth time.

As an aside, another way to rectify the birth chart is with the Progressed Ascendant. Let’s say someone has Uranus in their 2nd house. Somewhere in their 30’s or 40’s, the Pr Asc. would cross their Uranus. This is usually a major event! Sometime big and surprising nearly always comes about – it might be challenging or beneficial (depending on Uranus’ aspects in the natal chart, the house that Uranus rules – see where Aquarius is located – other beneficial transits at the time – look at Tr Jupiter or Pr Venus etc, etc), but it would always be a significant event and it is nearly always surprising and happens quick! If nothing like that happens during the 1 – 2 year window of Pr. Ascendant crossing Uranus, again, be very suspicious of that birth time – or be on the lookout for when that event happens! That will show how far off the birth time is.

Back to the main topic – the Natal Ascendant. Why this is a major indicator of new beginnings, fresh starts and rebirths? Whether new vehicles – cars or spiritual vehicles, new relationships (major Ascendant / Descendant association) or new directions in life, the Natal Ascendant often plays a large role in changes and new cycles.

I believe that one reason for this is due to the Natal Ascendant having so much to do with the actual conditions around the time of birth. And what is so important about our being born? Only one of the most important transitions and re-births of our lives! At that point, our astrology chart is set, we take our first breath as an air-breathing human, we literally have the cord cut from our mothers, we have often already decided at that point whether the world is a safe abundant loving place or not.

By the way, I am planning to teach Pre- and Perinatal Astrology and I will go into this concept very thoroughly in that setting. This is just a teaser for my planned upcoming classes! ūüôā

What does it mean that the Ascendant has to do with the time of birth? Here is an example, which I share with a caveat – Astrology is a complex topic to begin with, and then trying to predict what an aspect configuration will mean for someone in terms of their birth… well, it is nearly impossible: for instance Neptune conjunct the Ascendant can mean that significant amounts of pain meds were used in the birth such that energetic connection between mother and baby was disrupted and depending on what else is happening in that chart, that disruption might take years to repair (most new parents don’t know all the psycho-spiritual-emotional needs of babies and then how to repair them if interruption occurs). In this example, in addition to Neptune on the Ascendant, if other planets are there as well, then that can add yet another flavor to the birth dynamics. (It is very complicated!)

Why is the time of birth so important? In addition to the above, the manner of the birth and the manner of being welcomed into the world greatly influences our thoughts about how we grow our body. Think about the cultures that plan to receive a new spirit for a couple years, meditating for the song of the new individual, and then having the entire village sing their song when they are born. What would that be like? How would I have grown my body if I had been welcomed like that?!

As you can see, the Astrology Ascendant is quite an important section of the chart. Not only does it lay down the template for the rest of the chart (the astrological houses), but it also plays a roles in cycles of time – birth, re-birth, new beginnings and completions. It has a lot to do with our personalities, our relationships and our inherited health (for instance the beliefs, thought patterns, paradigms that affect our health over time).

And for Pre- and Perinatal Astrology, the Ascendant is a crucial area to cover. ūüôā

I am having the time of my life here in December 2017. Not sure how, but I am getting a LOT done. Prepping for massage school upcoming in January – selling books, packing things, studying Ethics of Touch and Pathology, etc. On top of that I am still seeing about 5 – 8 clients a week and assisting with a Craniosacral Therapy class.

Let us pause for an integration break. So much done, and yet to do. It is good to check in with my deeper slower healing rhythms – to connect with an organic pace that allows me to differentiate past from present, now from worrying about the future. ūüôā

So as I productively go through each day, I am still doing Svaroopa Yoga each morning for about half an hour. My body gets to rest down, supported and relaxed. It is the perfect way to start my day.

And during this Yin Yoga, I still have fantasies of teaching PPN Astrology. I am slowly writing down those thoughts – perhaps in 8 or 9 months it will become a reality. One step at a time – I am heading down to Virginia Beach for a 10 day retreat around Christmas which will be incredibly rejuvenating – Qigong on the beach, meditation, Buddhist prayers, Zapchen somatics, Dream Work Play. Then I move out of my apartment. Next I drive out West for school. And that is about as far into the future as I want to plan for now!

But there are apparently these underlying currents which I tap into in the mornings on my yoga blanket. Currents which speak of resourcing, grounding, stabilizing groups of students so they can go on to deeper insights about their pre- and perinatal ages and stages.

I will be posting some amazing photos from Colorado as I will be close to 14K peaks, hot springs, desert dunes and sacred mountains. Yay!

The astrological interpretation of Venus in Virgo in the natal chart is often times less-than-positive.  Authors talk about the individual being critical of their partners, nagging and cold.  Some karmic astrologers even go so far as to say that Venus in Virgo is the sign of someone who has been less-than-loving in a past life (lives) and that debt is coming home now.  Of course, when criticism comes into the mind, loving-kindness generally departs swiftly, this is fairly obvious.  But how can we simply stop this deeply ingrained, crystal-clear yet critical gaze in its tracks?

With all this said however, what is guaranteed with Venus in Virgo?  Will the individual put off marriage (due to their seeing imperfections in potential partners)?

I would argue that like astrology in general, where I practice frequency-based astrology, people with Venus in Virgo are quite unique Рwe cannot place them all in one basket and hope that our interpretation will work out for the majority of them.  Frequency-based astrology says that we must determine the frequency of the individual (where they are spiritually, emotionally, maturity-wise, self-care wise, renunciation, etc) before we can paint an accurate picture of how their astrology chart reflects their lives.

I have found, at least here in the United States, that most of the time, Venus in Virgo is associated with a strong religious upbringing.¬† This could be a strong Catholic influence or it might be a strict Protestant environment.¬† However, this is not always the case.¬† When religion plays a role, Venus in Virgo is often joined by other planets in Virgo (or a strong 6th house stellium for instance). If I see three or more planets in Virgo though, I am almost always rewarded with a surprised answer when I say, “So your family was quite religious, right?” Yep, usually the case.

Sometimes Venus in Virgo comes with a strong familial heritage – I have several clients who were raised in tightly-knit immigrant families here in the United States.¬† In their culture of origin, there are a lot of ‚Äúshoulds‚ÄĚ about what a good girl does and does not do.¬† In these cases, religion has less to do with the strict Virgoan perceptions. But the inner critic is there nonetheless.

Comprehensive Natal Chart Interpretation

Kirby will spend 90 minutes interpreting your Natal Birth chart. You can chat about any area that you like. This includes printed charts and it also includes about 30 minutes of preparation time! These are typically done on the phone, via Skype or in person if you happen to be in Virginia, USA.

I believe that most people have the resources internally to change their minds.  Literally to transform their mental attitudes and patterns.  Now, as you can probably surmise, this is not exactly easy to do, nor is it going to be a fast process.

However, life does this for the large majority of us.  We put up enough resistance to necessary change that eventually we realize that the only thing causing us suffering is our resistance, and we begrudgingly shift our stance.

Likewise, people with Venus in Virgo can change their minds and melt any frozen tissue around their hearts, allowing in some openness, acceptance, and compassion – basically embracing the mystery which their Venus in Pisces cousins so easily put their faith in.

Keeping all of this in mind, two more things before we wrap up. First people with Venus in Virgo might be the late-comers to the relationship table as it were. These people might put off marriage or partnering for some time. Rarely – like Venus in Virgo in the 12th or 6th house rare – Venus in Virgo might prefer to be a recluse or live a hermit lifestyle. And even then it is not set in stone – look to the Moon’s Nodes for further information on this topic.

Second, it is possible for us to delve deeper below the conscious surface and to literally change our minds and our heats. See my previous posts about doing birth process work or Pre- and Perinatal Therapy or working with Double Binds. Once we start to ply apart the tangled web of inherited patterns and habits and assumptions from our ancestors (honoring them in the process), once we have the desire to heal our ancestral lineage and start working with a professional who has the skills to hold that type of container, then we can gain more equanimity or strengthen our loving-kindness and compassion to become a different person. I know it sounds kind of preposterous. But I have done it. Where I was fifteen years ago, and where I am today – people from my high school do not recognize me; it is literally a night and day change.

Working with legitimate heart teachers can change us for the better, and drastically change us. We can become more resilient, clearer, more articulate about our needs, etc. We can fully embrace our inheritance as human beings. ūüôā

So if you have Venus in Virgo, don’t fret. Find an authentic spiritual teacher or a spiritual (religious) lineage that you resonate with and start doing some practice. Work to melt any icy areas around your heart. Forgive yourself, your parents, grieve anything that was left incomplete, etc. And if your karma (frequency) is positive enough, then you have nothing to worry about. The colder more critical side of Virgo may have transformed to come out through service and generosity and loving-kindness.

Astronomically, Pluto has been disparaged, dropped from the ranks of planet-hood and I suspect this reflects our society’s discomfort with Plutonian material.

What is Plutonian material? ¬†What is Pluto’s influence in the astrology chart? ¬†What is his rulership?

Pluto is the power behind the throne. ¬†Pluto is one of the four power-hungry planets in the pantheon of the solar system – along with Saturn, the Sun and Mars. ¬†For the most part, these planets are associated with the Fixed signs, which are also known as the Serpent Signs – Aquarius (Saturn’s previous rulership), Scorpio (Pluto’s present and Mar’s previous), Leo (the Sun) and Taurus is not exactly represented as Venus, its present ruler does not “seek” power but understands that true power lies in practicing abundant generosity and kindness and that when we love something or someone fully and maintain a low position (humility), then we have all the “power” that we need. ¬†But more on Venus in a bit. ¬†So Pluto seeks typically seeks power because of some mysterious unconscious yearning. ¬†How it goes about that is indicated by the rest of the astrology chart.

What does Pluto do in the astrology chart?  Well we are talking about the ruler of the most complex sign in the zodiac (Scorpio), so this must be a complex answer.  But to over simplify things for the moment, I am going to write about the ways that Pluto amplifies whatever he touches.

Stepping off topic one more time… ¬†Above I mention how our society might be hesitant (at best) to delve into Pluto’s material, well I want to remind people that esoterically, Pluto rules both the best of the light (wisdom, personal integrity, and compassion) and the worst of the darkness (polluted swamps of the unconscious). ¬†I suspect Pluto has gotten a bad reputation – being discovered around the time of the atom bomb’s revelation, I think some people see a poor Pluto aspect and naturally cringe. ¬†But that is not necessary. ¬†Pluto is a binary planet system – Charon, a large moon of Pluto orbits it and from an esoteric perspective, this dual system gives Pluto rulership over the swampy depths of the psyche AND once we purify and come to a deep visceral understanding of who we are and what true power is, then Pluto is transformed like the phoenix (one of Scorpio’s symbols) into Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and healing.

Pluto’s constipating effects come about when we do not acknowledge who we are. ¬†When we suppress our natural urges and healthy desires, due to upbringing, societal pressures, or whatever, we are pushing Pluto deeper into our subconscious. ¬†And if we know our mythology, then we know that Pluto tends to erupt violently onto the scene, and this is certainly possible if we try to bottle up our powerful emotions for too long. ¬†Eventually something is going to snap. ¬†So it is best to get clearer about our needs and feelings now, rather than waiting to see how Pluto might manifest in his shadowy manner. ¬†But we can never blame Pluto – rather he is a reflection of our psyche and our natural predispositions.

So why does Pluto tend to amplify aspects of our chart?  And keep in mind, depending on our karma, like I mention above, this amplification is oftentimes positive.  If we have poor predispositions in our unconscious, then these negative habits could be amplified just as easily.

(By the way, I am going to over-simplify these definitions below. ¬†Therefore, do not read your chart and then say, “Oh my God! ¬†I don’t fit on that hyper-polarized spectrum.” ¬†Right. ¬†There is a lot of gray area that I am not able to describe in such a short blog post. ¬†You might want to call or email me to set up an astrology interpretation if you have questions about your astrological Pluto. ¬†I consider myself quite knowledgeable on the subject.)

Pluto and the Sun: Here is one combination of two of the power-grasping giants that I touched on above. ¬†The Sun is the overt, natural leader in Leo. ¬†At its best, these aspects tend to amplify the Sun’s natural leadership abilities. ¬†It increases ambition, a desire for recognition and our innate authority. ¬†At its worst, it can make someone despotic and power-hungry, stooping to great depths to undermine opponents and competitors. ¬†You must look at the rest of the chart to see how and where this authority and power extend (in Cancer it might be the head of a powerful family, in Capricorn it might be an ambitious CEO and in Scorpio, it would be an altogether different animal). ¬†ūüôā

Pluto and the Moon: Here we have the lunar domain of the emotions and non-physical energies (psychic abilities, intuition, dreams, etc). ¬†When Pluto and the Moon get together, it can be over-sensitivity (depending on the sign), emotional reactiveness AND/OR it can be emotional understanding and awareness. ¬†It could be extremes in the way we express our feelings AND/OR an innate psychic ability. ¬†If we delve through our neuroses and traumas, we can discover that Pluto’s influence on the Moon can be an emotional anchor in an uncertain world. ¬†We can read people with an uncanny gut feeling and we can express our feelings with such ease and grace that others marvel at this skillful ability. ¬†Of course the signs and houses involved matter a lot and the rest of the chart will indicate how far along we are on a psychological understand (or in our karmic evolution).

Pluto and Mercury: ¬†Here is the god of communication – the link between the head and the heart. ¬†So what you must ask yourself here is – does Pluto clear up that connection or sully those waters. ¬†At its best, this is someone whose mental clarity and cogency is unparalleled – a great investigator, researcher and scientist (possibly). ¬†This person would be a great teacher and a magnificent orator. ¬†On the flip side, Pluto here can indicate mental confusion. ¬†It can amplify the worst of Mercury’s qualities – impulsiveness, impatience and irritability. ¬†There is the possibility that Pluto in a hard aspect to Mercury is indicative of early trauma and this in turn would gear up that native’s nervous system to no end. ¬†Of course, whenever Pluto (who is strongly associated with the reproductive organs and sexual expression) is involved, we might consider skillfully inquiring about early trauma. ¬†[Disclaimer – if you do not have seriously refined skills in dealing with early trauma, then it might be best to avoid the subject and let a professional handle it.]

Pluto and Venus:  As I mentioned above, Pluto can be in its lower manifestations or in his higher karmically-refined emanation as Minerva.  It is important to know which is the dominant force when dealing with any Pluto aspects, but no where is it more apparent than when perceiving Pluto / Venus contacts.  This is the person who could (rarely) be the saint who understands that we can love something without grasping at it (love without attachment is a beautiful thing!  Watch videos of great Tibetan lamas like Garchen Rinpoche if you want an example of this).  We can give love even to those people who spurn and reject it.  We can rest in equanimity and practice kindness toward all we come in contact with Рnot judging anyone.  But who am I kidding?  That kind of saint is very difficult to find.  Rather, Pluto can indicate that this individual is lustful, possessive and/or jealous.  Pluto and Venus is where some people tie power with sex.  And what is the best way to do this?  By connecting money and sex Рhave you ever seen the older wealthy oligarch who has a trophy wife at least 30 Р40 years younger than he is?  It happens.

I would personally recommend that one adopts an authentic spiritual practice though where we can start to get an understanding of our inner machinations.  Then, over time (in my experience, nothing comes lightning-quick), we can start to dispel inner delusions and mis-understandings and build in more loving-kindness and appropriate compassion.  But it must start with the self.  If we find ourselves grasping and clinging to someone or something, there is the obvious possibility that Pluto and Venus are working together (maybe manifesting an early, unmet childhood need) in a challenging manner.

Pluto and Mars: Here again we have a meeting of two of the power-hungry planets.  But as we all know, Mars rarely ever wins out in his hunt for power and hegemony.  Why?  Because he seeks to forcefully get people to do his will.  And this requires a lot of time and energy and supervision.  This is why Venus and Neptune are the innately powerful energies in the world Рthey are humble, understanding, generous, graceful and compassionate.  Be like water my friends (Bruce Lee), be like water.

When Pluto and Mars get together, we must be very careful and very wise about how we handle this powerful combination. ¬†There will most likely be a LOT of energy expressed. ¬†This is the person who is naturally gifted in athletics or as a soldier. ¬†They are very hard workers and they can have great physical endurance. ¬†There will be a strong discontent with the status quo – so again, are we looking at a Kali-like destroyer (lower manifestation), or are we looking at a reformer and passionate, non-violent activist working with Minerva’s guidance? ¬†Most often you will wonder about this native’s forceful ways and powerful animistic energies – this person generally does not enjoy being told “No.” ¬†Mars’ impulsiveness might occasionally emerge and there could be emotional storms, irrational displays of anger and irritability. ¬†At its best however, this is the person who is striving every day, every week to know themselves better – whether through depth psychology, a ton of reading and introspection, working with a spiritual teacher or through process-oriented bodywork. ¬†This would be the person who has come a LONG way in transforming their inner desires and passions.

I am going to pause here as this post is getting quite long!  Thank you for reading and let me know if you have any questions.

My last post was about having natal Jupiter in the 12th in the sign of Cancer.  And now, for the next few months, transiting Jupiter is also in the sign of Cancer, meaning for me Jupiter is traveling through familiar territory Рthe 12th house.  So what are some potential ramifications of this?

The 12th House in the larger scheme of Astrological Cycles… ¬†Go back and peek at the previous post if you have not already done so, because that will detail what Jupiter in the 12th (as an independent Astrological House) can mean. ¬†Here I will detail what the 12th House means in relation to the other Houses.

In Western Astrology, the 12 Astrological Houses each describe and are associated with differing areas of life. ¬†The 1st House is typically the beginning, the time and situation around one’s birth, and it is very self-oriented. ¬†What is my path? ¬†How do I go about treading my path will show up with the sign on the Ascendant and its aspects.

Likewise, as the 1st House is the beginning of a new cycle, the 12th House is the closure of the previous cycle.  That is why the 12th House is sometimes described as the Cosmic Dustpan.  Because that is where we are tidying up all the work done in the previous Houses and WE ARE PREPARING FOR A NEW CYCLE TO COME ABOUT.

But if you are like me, you are not entirely comfortable with the unknown! ¬†We want some control. ¬†We want some knowledge about what is around the corner. ¬†This is why most of us do not go through huge upheavals during Jupiter’s transition from 12th to 1st. ¬†(But we might say it is an upheaval when the Progressed Moon or Saturn go from natal 12th House to 1st.) ¬†Generally speaking we will have some knowledge about what is around the corner, but the details will be missing. ¬†For example… ¬†I am going to start a new direction in school – graduate school maybe? ¬†How am I going to pay for that? ¬†Which school will accept me? ¬†Where will I live? ¬†Will I have to get a job while I am in school? ¬†Etc…

Temptations as the 12th is associated with Neptune… ¬†For me, as I mentioned in my previous post, Jupiter in the 12th House is not always easy. ¬†Yes it is Jupiter we are talking about, and yes in the 12th it is known as a Guardian Angel… ¬†But too many Neptunian influences will be difficult to navigate through. ¬†If we have Jupiter trine to our Sun, Moon or Venus from the 12th House, then we might be inclined to sit back and wait for the blessings to fall into our laps. ¬†I am not saying we are lazy (look to Saturn’s placement to answer that question). ¬†But we have learned that we are just fortunate enough to get by and we can be content with that. ¬†This will not be everybody, but this could especially be true for people with Jupiter in Cancer making a trine to a Piscean Sun Moon or Venus (plus a couple of planets in Virgo). ¬†You will be blessed in that case. ¬†But how you go about using your potential is up to you.

I started off this section mentioning the Neptunian temptations because Jupiter in the 12th is in Neptune’s domain. ¬†And again, this would be true more so for people with strongly Neptunian charts. ¬†Look for a stellium (3 or more planets) in the 12th House or in Pisces and / or look to strong Neptune aspects (conjunct / square / opposite Sun, Moon, Mercury, Ascendant). ¬†If we have a strong pull from Neptune when Jupiter is in the 12th house, instead of waiting with confident patience, knowing that we must consciously pause while a change of energy comes about, we might push on with frustration and tire ourselves out. ¬†Or we could become frustrated with the waiting and say to the Universe, “Screw this! ¬†I’m going to escape from this difficult waiting¬†tonight!” ¬†You will hear Neptune’s voice whispering in your ear – and if a lot of 12th house energy or Neptune / Pisces energy is flowing around your chart, then you should find a wise person and ally yourself with them. ¬†I have heard it said that a Dragon – a powerful, wise and compassionate person is hard to find, but if you know of a Dragon in your neighborhood (an authentic spiritual teacher might very well be a Dragon), then you should seek them out. ¬†Especially during Jupiter’s transits through your 12th House!

When Jupiter is in the 12th House, see what forms of self care are both easy and kind to our selves. ¬†We can take a short bath. ¬†We can take a quick nap instead of using the computer to distract ourselves. ¬†Maybe we can go for a nice walk or a short hike? ¬†When you hear Neptune’s silky seductive voice whispering in your ear, move your awareness down into your heart. ¬†What does your body want? ¬†What does your heart need? ¬†Maybe sleeping would be a better idea than watching that Star Wars marathon…

Feeling uncertain about the future but resting in the immediately present blessings… ¬†When Jupiter is in the 12th House, typically things will work out quite well within the next year. ¬†When Jupiter actually crosses the Ascendant, things will have been gradually clearing up and by that point, you will know what direction to pursue and how to go about that pursuit. ¬†We will probably be able to wait patiently while Jupiter is transiting the 12th House, but like I mention above, who is good at waiting patiently with confidence? ¬†This requires that we TRUST the process and trust the Universe to provide for us. ¬†And frankly, at times, that can be terrifying! ¬†Most of us use some form of distraction to pass the time. ¬†We do not like the word “bored.” ¬†We would rather spend an hour on Facebook than lie around waiting for the Universe to show us our path ¬†ūüôā ¬† ¬†But if you can slowly start to realize the ways in which we take a detour from our path, then we can start to do self care or spiritual practices which help us stay present and aware.

I have my Natal Jupiter in the sign of Cancer, in the 12th house.  Now let me unpack what this means.

What is Jupiter about?

Jupiter is the jovial, optimistic, speculating, the-grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side-of-the-fence, wanderlust-filled, adventuring, mental pioneering, broadener of horizons. ¬†Typically, Jupiter is seen as one of the sources of enthusiasm in the astrology chart. ¬†Does your Jupiter trine your Sun Moon or Mercury? ¬†If so, you may be prone to bouts of enthusiastic delight. ¬†ūüôā ¬†Also, Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and it is the only planet which actually gives off energy by itself (without the Sun being involved). ¬†It’s size indicates how it tends to expand our thoughts about what is possible. ¬†Jupiter can push the envelope as it were and this can definitely show up with a potential to gamble when we have a strong Jupiter (or in fire signs). ¬†Although in this case – a watery sign like Cancer and a diffuse house like the 12th, gambling may not be indicated.

Jupiter in Cancer?

Jupiter is exalted in the sign of Cancer. ¬†What does exalted mean? ¬†This is the second most potent placing for the planet to be. ¬†Jupiter rules Sagittarius. ¬†Meaning it is very strong in that pioneering, studying (sometimes know-it-all sign), adventuresome fire sign, but it is also strong in the sign of Cancer. ¬†Why? ¬†Because Cancer is all about nurturing and taking care of our loved ones – be they family members or close friends and associates. ¬†When Jupiter’s natural expansion encounters Cancer’s natural love of nurturing, it is a good combination, let me tell you. ¬†In Buddhism, the word for the “highest” altruistic motivation is called Bodhicitta, which means the mind which wishes for all sentient beings (seen and unseen, known and unknown) to attain happiness and complete enlightenment. ¬†It is a very powerful motivation. ¬†However, most of us (myself included) have a difficult time maintaining strong Bodhicitta because we feel slighted by anger or jealousy or not getting our way (etc…).

Well Jupiter in Cancer has a natural leaning toward an altruistic motivation.  You will not find many people with Jupiter in Cancer with a powerful cutthroat mentality unless it shows up in multiple other areas of the chart.  Jupiter in Cancer types will be natural cooks, care takers, nurses, teachers, healers, and / or realtors (Cancer has a Lunar connection to the 4th house of land and real estate as well).

Jupiter in the 12th house?

Jupiter in the 12th house is said to be the Guardian Angel of the astrology chart. ¬†Why is this? ¬†Because the 12th house is the most mysterious of the Houses. ¬†It is where we subconsciously work against ourselves. ¬†It can also indicate a natural proclivity toward spiritual practices and awareness. ¬†It can even indicate psychic abilities (whether the individual wants them or not). ¬†Keep in mind that the 12th house is strongly associated with Neptune (and Pisces). ¬†Previously, before Neptune took over Pisces’ rulership, Jupiter ruled the sign of the bonded dual Fishes. ¬†So Jupiter in the 12th house is not much of a detriment when looking at planetary strengths. ¬†Normally all planets (save Saturn) lose strength when they are tenanting the 12th house. ¬†But Jupiter can do okay there.

Jupiter in the 12th is watered down though. ¬†You will not often find crazy dare devils who are risking their lives deep into their 40’s and 50’s with this placement. ¬†Depending on what the 5th house and its ruler look like, you might take a few risks, but this individual will probably realize the fragility of the human condition sooner rather than later. ¬†And yes, I speak from personal experience… ¬†Therefore a watery Jupiter in a watery house is not going to be the wildly adventurous or overly jovial type (unless other strong indications exist in the chart).

So… ¬†My Jupiter in the 12th, in the 29th degree of Cancer indicates that I have the potential for spiritual awareness, a natural proclivity toward giving and altruism, a desire to nurture those who I care about and I might even have innate healing abilities. ¬†Hhhmmm. ¬†Well this all sounds great so far right?! ¬†And it is. ¬†I am quite blessed.

Kirby will spend 90 minutes interpreting your Natal Birth chart. You can chat about any area that you like. This includes printed charts and it also includes about 30 minutes of preparation time! These are typically done on the phone, via Skype or in person if you happen to be in Virginia, USA.

So why am I hesitating?  Because Jupiter in the 12th house indicates a strong leaning toward a nebulous Neptunian nature.  And then if this individual (me) is a Pisces, which I am, with Neptune squaring his natal Sun, which I have, then there is often times too much Neptune going around.  And what does this mean?

Neptune seeks to transcend this dense world of relative reality we live in – in other words, Neptune seeks to transcend planet Earth and all the physical phenomena that come with living on this great planet. ¬†Neptune is the escapist, the addict, the artist, the seeker, the poet, the romantic and the mystic. ¬†But it is never the pragmatic realist ¬†ūüôā ¬† Sorry folks. ¬†So that is why it has taken me at least 35 years to begin to realize what I am doing on this planet. ¬†And this waiting is often times hell. ¬†I would rather push push push and accomplish something (this pushing is probably Saturn talking by the way, or an unconscious double bind speaking), even if it feels empty down the road than sit around and wait for my energy to rise. ¬†(Because Neptune can also indicate a watered down immune system where your energy will literally wax and wane.)

With all that said, Jupiter in the 12th house in Cancer is an incredible blessing. ¬†I am in contact with my spirit guides. ¬†I do not “hear” them directly yet, but I have spent a lot of time working on embodying and becoming more grounded. ¬†So I feel it in my body if a decision is way off the mark. ¬†I will get a quick head-ache if I make a severe detour from my path. ¬†And my body suffers if I waste too much time with less-than-wholesome pursuits. ¬† ūüôā

I hope this speaks about Jupiter in Cancer and / or Jupiter in the 12th house a little.  Let me know if you have comments on this subject.

To be clear regarding this topic, in psychological astrology we can talk about the “shadow of Gemini” or “Scorpio’s shadow.” ¬†And if I were talking in that regard, I would be referring to the way in which those signs can work against ourselves – shadowy, unconscious material as it were. ¬†In this case though, I am referring to an actual “thing.” ¬†And yes, “thing” is a technical term. ¬†ūüôā

When a planet goes retrograde, the point at which it seems to “pause” in the sky is known as its shadow. ¬†For instance, (because we are talking about this planet) Venus went retrograde back in December at 29 degrees of Capricorn. ¬†That is the furthest forward it had gotten before turning retrograde. ¬†Following me so far? ¬†So Venus’ shadow is presently at 29 degrees of Capricorn, considering as I write this, Venus is completing its retrograde cycle at 13 degrees Capricorn.

Here is the thing which any non-astrologer (and probably some astrologers may not either) does not know. ¬†When Venus (or any planet for that matter) goes direct, the shadow will still be “in effect” for a short period of time thereafter. ¬†This is why one of my astrology teachers used to preach that the retrograde cycle lasts at least two weeks after the planet starts moving forward (and I’m beginning to think he knew what he was talking about!) ¬† ūüôā

So when does the shadow stop being in effect? ¬†When the planet crosses its shadow. ¬†So for Venus, it will officially be out of retrograde (meaning it is stationing direct and moving forward for the next 18 months or so) after January 31st. ¬†But on that day, it will be at 13 degrees of Capricorn. ¬†It will still have four plus weeks before it will cross its shadow. ¬†Meaning, and I will say more, if 29 degrees of Capricorn is significant in your chart (and you would know this fact already because Venus stationed retrograde at that point, and that shadow point has been in effect since December 20th, 2013), that you may not be completely in the clear until February 28th or so. ¬†Sorry if I’m bursting any bubbles…

If you want to know the exact day, Venus will not cross 29 degrees of Capricorn until March 5th.  So that is a good long time to slowly start to creep forward and finally it will start moving at a decent clip in the middle of February, and it will cross its shadow officially ending this retrograde cycle for 2014 (for Venus).

Here are some examples, just to be more clear.  Let us say that you have Mars at 29 degrees of Libra in your Natal Chart.  Normally, when Venus is moving at its usual, quick pace, Venus would transit your Natal Mars in two or three days tops.  It would be at 27 degrees of a Cardinal sign one day, at 29 degrees the next and then it would be moving on into the next Fixed sign.  And you would feel the reflected emotional intensity for only two to threes (normally!).  But here, the retrograde cycle would draw that out for at least six weeks, and maybe longer.

Continuing where I left off, that means that around December 20th of this past year, Venus paused at the point squaring your Mars (29 Capricorn) for a solid two to three weeks due to the retrograde process. ¬†So you may have had a hot and steamy holidays there (or you may have wished you had someone to have a hot and steamy celebration with when those two planets meet up!). ¬†AND… ¬†due to Venus’ shadow sitting at the square point to your Mars, guess what? ¬†There would be a subtle hint of that intense attraction and magnetic sexual energy off and on over the past month or so – even when Venus itself backed up away from the square point. ¬†Does that make sense? ¬†I hope so. ¬†Venus and Mars, when a square happens, can be touchy bedfellows – generally speaking when Venus transits Natal Mars, it is easier, but sometimes arguments and emotionality can arise. ¬†There will be some heightened erotic energy, but at times it can be a little juvenile – meaning, “I want what I want damn it and why can’t I have that!!!” ¬†So hopefully if this is happening to you, you and your partner will be on similar pages and then you can have a healthy outlet for this energy!

Basically what I am trying to say is this: look at your Natal Chart. ¬†Do you have any planets in the 27 – 30 degree mark of Cardinal signs AND / OR do you have any planets in the 1 – 3 degree point of Fixed signs? ¬†Cardinals are Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn and Fixed signs are Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius. ¬†These planets would all be affected by Venus’ shadow sitting at its present location, AND that might explain the up and down Venusian energy you have been feeling over the past month despite the fact that you don’t actually see much happening in your chart. ¬†That’s because the shadow in a inferred point (there is no shadow in the sky where the planet went retrograde) ¬† ūüôā

Now this same thing is true for any other planet. ¬†If you have Neptune at 29 degrees of Aries, then lookout – you have probably had rose-colored glasses on for the past few weeks ¬†ūüôā ¬† And there could be a disillusionment heading your way! ¬†If you have Uranus at 29 degrees of Cancer, this could also throw a fun, exciting, but not-long-lasting wrench in the relationship works¬†especially if ¬†you are starting a new relationship since December 10th or more recently (because then you’d have Venus in opposition to Uranus influencing your desires for six to eight weeks). ¬†And the same is also true for Jupiter at 29 degrees of a Cardinal sign, Pluto and Saturn. ¬†And yes, I did just throw Jupiter in that mix.

Even the great Benefic Jupiter can bring difficulty (imagine too much abundance, too much indulgence and / or too much hedonism – then you are getting close to what might be arising here). ¬†You will definitely enjoy the time with Venus in continuous or shadowy aspect to Jupiter for eight weeks, but afterward you might say to yourself, “Well shucks, that was fun, but I may have wasted some time there…” ¬† ūüôā

So good luck deciphering this and hopefully it brings a touch more clarity to the subject of Venus retrograde.  I have been noticing it myself as I have a planet at 29 degrees of a Cardinal sign.  So I stand behind these words.  I would love to hear your comments.  And thank you for reading.
