Urban Dharma, Asheville North Carolina

So I got to spend a couple days with friends and Sangha members in North Carolina. It was very pleasant – fulfilling, relaxing and potent. I had heard much about Urban Dharma, having seen it in its planning stages and hearing about all the developments, but I had yet to visit – either Asheville or UD. So this is my less-than-expert report about the Center.

Urban Dharma seems to be a multi-denominational Buddhist center. What I mean is that it is not associated with a specific lineage exclusively. I have a feeling there will be a number of Drikung Kagyu teachers coming to give blessings and Dharma talks, but the center welcomes Buddhists of all flavors. The primary Buddha statue on the shrine is of Amitabha (Shakyamuni) – not exactly Tibetan Buddhist – however there are a number of Tibetan Buddhism statues on the sides of the shrine, along with several Tibetan Thangkas – large, ornate scroll paintings scattered throughout the temple space. Therefore I got the feeling it was a Mahayana center which was flavored with the strong essences of the Tibetan tradition.

The shrine is just gorgeous. It was designed around the large (maybe three or four foot tall) stone statue of Amitabha. The shrine was built on site and the polished wooden stump which Maitreya Buddha stands on is just incredible. They said that the wood was so beautiful that they did not want to cut it to fit the shrine – instead they put a hole in the bottom of the shrine to accommodate the polished wooden stump! See the picture below to see how the wood goes through the top layer of the shrine.

Urban Dharma is well situated in Downtown Asheville. It is right across the street from the Grove Arcade – a fancy building which houses an indoor mall of sorts. Therefore the Center may receive many people who just happen to walk by and see that there is a Buddhist temple to visit. And if you have not visited, it is well worth it!

When you walk into Urban Dharma, you will find yourself in the Gallery – a shop where they sell various Buddhist ritual items, statues and artwork. The proceeds go to supporting the various Buddhist events at the center. Then behind the Gallery is the temple space. At present, there is a Buddhist shrine with multiple statues on it – the large stone statue being Amitabha, then there is a stupa, a section for Dharma texts as well as statues of Chenrezig and Manjushri. Thangkas of the Medicine Buddha mandala and Shakyamuni Buddha round out the main shrine. At present there is also a Protector Shrine dedicated to Achi Chokyi Drolma – one of the Drikung Kagyu Protector Deities. Buddhist Dharma protectors are wisdom beings who swore to protect the teachings and to offer guidance and protection to sincere practitioners. There are plans to put in two shrines, one on each of the side walls.

Primary Shrine at Urban Dharma, NC

In the back room is a small kitchen area where we had the food for the potluck. And then upstairs is a conference room that was transformed into a storeroom where they conduct the activities of Tibetan Spirit (tibetanspirit.com) such as selling, packing and shipping Buddhist ritual items, statues and Thangkas. Very cool. These proceeds also go to support the Dharma Center’s activities (and overhead).

There were many young people at both Saturday’s and Sunday’s teachings, which I was very happy to see. It seems like a great community, and it will only get stronger as they plan to fill statues together and have more events of a community nature, versus just doing Buddhist events. For instance, this Wednesday they plan to have a dynamic music venue, which they are calling a friend-raising event (not fundraising). 🙂 Neat!!

I plan to head back to Urban Dharma in March and / or April when they have well-known teachers coming such as Khenchen Konchog Gyaltsen and Garchen Rinpoche.

North Carolina pilgrimage in Asheville

Who’d’ve thunk it? Going on a Buddhist pilgrimage in North Carolina… Well that’s right! One does not instantly think of Buddhism when N.C. is mentioned. But I am here to attend teachings by Khenpo Choephel at Urban Dharma in Asheville NC. And to rest down in the midst of everything!

Picking up Khenpo from the Charlotte Airport, I drive with him to Black Mountain just outside of A’ville. In the car, Khenpo tells me stories of Drikung Khandros (women dakinis or extraordinary Buddhist practitioners) in Tibet who helped with the rebuilding of nunneries which had been destroyed by the Chinese Cultural Revolution. We chat a little about the Vajrayogini Mandala which is supposedly surrounding the Drikung Thil monastery in Tibet (China). Khenpo is presently the resident teacher of the Pittsburgh Ratnashri Sangha, so I ask him about that center and city. Khenpo reminds me that it is good to slow down as he requests we stop for coffee and a relaxing pit stop at a Dunkin Donuts. I’m not sure the North Carolinians knew what to do with a Buddhist monk – one guy kept asking him why he wasn’t wearing sandals? But everyone was very nice to our teacher.

On Saturday we received Phowa teachings from Khenpo at the Urban Dharma Center. See my next post for more about Urban Dharma. We had a crowd of about 25 as this teaching was pretty much invitation only, but it was still a great day. We had a pot luck dinner on Saturday night. Then Khenpo made tormas (ritual offering cakes) for Sunday’s activities. While he was making tormas, I got a car-tour of downtown Asheville as I would be driving Khenpo the following morning – early – and they did not want us getting lost. 🙂 At least not more lost than I already was.

I was Khenpo’s unqualified attendant of sorts. I settled into this role with ease however as it was my intention to come down to NC to rest – I already volunteer with two other centers, so I did not want to start the trend of burning myself out at a third one! On Saturday, all that meant was making sure Khenpo’s hot water was always full and hot, and then making certain everyone knew that he was a vegetarian for the dinner. On Sunday though, it was fun to attend the Khenpo as he did a self-empowerment.

Sunday was an empowerment of Amitayus – the Buddha of longevity. When Lamas give empowerments, they must first generate the deity in themselves in a pre-ritual. Therefore we got to UD early on Sunday and finished the preparations – with a long life empowerment there are actually quite a few miscellaneous things required: long life pills (small dough balls which are colored red), long life vase, a long life banner (an arrow wrapped in colorful ribbons) and more. There is symbolism to all these ritual items but it would be best to let an expert speak about it! I was happy though to sit near Khenpo as he went through the preparations. See the picture below for a close up of the Long Life Pills and the Long Life Vase.

Then empowerment (blessing ceremony of sorts) went well. This was the official public opening of Urban Dharma and apparently many people found out about the teachings. And who would not want a long life empowerment, seriously? You mean I can just sit there, do some visualizations, receive a long life pill and then I receive blessings that can possibly extinguish obstacles to a long life? Count me in! Actually it is a bit more complicated than that – all empowerments have what are called samayas – or commitments – which we agree to abide by with receiving the empowerment and sure enough, there were some samayas with this one as well. Samayas are secret though – ask a qualified Lama about them if you are truly interested.

After the empowerment we went out to eat lunch and then I hopped on the (wrong) road to head back home. More on that in the next post.

North Carolina pilgrimage

I’m on day two of a journey to Urban Dharma, a new Dharma Center in Asheville. I don’t know a whole lot about the center just yet. I have been told many good things, but I’m going for myself, to investigate (and to spend quality time with friends and to receive authentic Dharma teachings). For now, I am in Davidson NC where I will help out a little by picking up the Khenpo who is teaching this weekend. Actually what a blessing to be able to spend an hour or two with an authentic Lama!

Last night, I had quality conversations over chrysanthemum infusions. Plus I got to see many goodies which are just back from Nepal, which will be for sale in the Urban Dharma store – go to Tibetanspirit.com for more about purchasing Buddhist ritual items. This included a moderate sized stupa which needs to be filled, several statues for the center itself (not for sale) and I heard about many relics which were given for the sake of filling the multiple statues and stupas.

Most importantly, at least for my good-sized self-clinging ego, is that I have four days off from work, meaning my feet and legs can get some needed rest before I dive back in next week. I will take pictures when I get to the Center tomorrow and post them when I get back to C’ville next week. Yay!

Day Two, winter retreat 2011

much easier to rest down…
fullness within, warmth, heart connection with self and other still chilly but much improved…
holding space for a rebirthing process…
long blue wire frame slinky-like tube…
ooph! how much longer can I hold present for this process?
Wow glad for background in this work, because it ain’t easy!
Zapchen exercises – more advanced, mutuality, presence touching presence…
they say that less than 15% of americans practice this level of subtle awareness… really? when?
Warm delicious dinner with spiritual friends, sitting in front of a fire…
nothing like it!
I leave the retreat space feeling like I have just done some hot yoga or been hung over a warm fire for a time!

It only takes an hour (to re-member who you are)

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore. Reproduction without permission is prohibited. Thanks for reading and please leave comments.

After having worked like my life desperately depended on it for the past five weeks or so, I finally had an afternoon to rest down among supportive Dharma-practitioner friends (spiritual friends) in one of the most potent and juicy environments – at an annual winter retreat.

I have been feeling burnt out (already) at work and needing a break, so this breather was so very refreshing. I wrote down a little about the shift from “computer-game-mind” to returning to a community with heart.

Settling down.
a few minutes pass…
noticing a baseline of anxiety and a rapid heart beat – is this usual? ugh I hope not!

luckily I arrived for the afternoon Zapchen session (see below about Zapchen), and of course my friends, having had three days under their belts, were diving in deep. Today is advanced techniques, which thankfully I have already done in numerous previous retreats. However, my body was in curiously rough shape…

But it only took an hour.

With yawning, sighing, resting down, I began to notice how tight certain parts of my body were – shoulders, lungs, pericardium and surrounding heart areas and once I became very aware of subtleties, I noticed that even the lining around my brain was contracted and it did not have any ideas about when it would be letting up…

the icy grip of computer-game-mind was showing its effects. With time, and with juicy guidance from a qualified Zapchen teacher, I began to allow the sunny potency of trust and self-love to penetrate the tight regions between and within cranial bones…

at first I thought it might take days or weeks to unlock the many frozen layers of fascia and dura mater within cranium, chest, but with awareness, and being gentle yet firm, I found myself being able to smile with slightly more ease…

Wow! Then the comment, “Make little kissy movements around the top of your crown…” I did not know how to do that. Followed by the awesome comment: “the juiciest moment is when you notice that your brain notices that it’s just been kissed!” Whoa… I could chew on that exercise and resulting subtle awareness for a long time!

So, with humming, with awareness and with breath and sound, I repair and re-member numerous layers of tissue today…

First I recollected all my scattered bits and pieces, then I set a clear potent intention, and then I rested in alignment once I got there…
“Gee! That’s different! And at this point, different is very good!”

So now, when I notice contraction setting in. Which direction will I choose? I need to make a daily, system-wide announcement that all the various (different aged) parts of myself are loved! Good good.

Happy New Year All! May all beings know a happy and healthy New Year, free from suffering and dissatisfaction and its causes.

Zapchen Somatics are a system of simple, potent exercises, techniques and games which lead human beings to rest down into their bodies, to be in alignment with ease and to be more self-loving and playful. All to the good really. Zapchen was created by Julie Henderson, Ph.D.

a fool’s poem

Holiday Greetings from Beyond

Come Play With Me, it said.

NO!! I’m afraid… I cried.

Yes, I Understand, It’s Okay To Come Closer, it replied.

NO! I don’t want to get hurt again! Go away!

Look Down… You Will Find That Your Next Step Is But a Tiny Hop Down, it cajoled.

NO! I’m afraid of heights! Are you crazy?!

I Am a Pool, a Well, a Lake. I Am Here And You Have Only To Drink, it suggested enigmatically.

What?! There’s no telling who has been swimming in there prior to this, No Way!

Good… You Are Starting To Turn Your Mind Toward IT, now it was really confusing me.

What?!?! What ever do you mean? I like where I was at…

Yes, Just Relax, Let Go, Allow the Breath of Life to Flow Effortlessly, it whispered, closer now.

But I’m comfortable with my suffering! I know it, it’s familiar! I’m scared of change…

You Are Simply Delaying the Inevitable, it uttered.

What?! I want out! I did not sign up for this!

Good… Do You Realize That You Have Been Creeping Ever Closer to ME this Whole Time? It questioned.

What?! OH NO! I don’t want this! I’m afraid… Fuck off… please!

Just Breathe… Come Join Me… Rest in Ease and Bliss, it suggested.

Oh… Why… This change is easier… But I still don’t know! I’m skeptical!

Be Gentle… Yet Firm… As You Step Forward Into the Light, it was enigmatic yet again.

But I’ve always stay on the fringes…

Yes… Stayed. A statement this time.

Oh… wait… this change is… just right.

You Are the Juice of Transformation… Allow IT… Know IT… Be IT. It spoke for the last time.

AAAaaahhhhhh…

More about UVa, six months after graduating

As a recent graduate of the University, and having lived in and around Charlottesville for more than 10 years now, I have some unique perspectives (as both a “townie” and a past “student”).

You know, the more I think about my time and experience at the University, the more grateful I am for having gone there. What I have not mentioned in past posts about UVa is the Honor System, the financial aid for low income students and the programs at the University which do not get much recognition because UVa is primarily known for just a few outstanding departments.

First, the Honor System. No, it is not perfect. And yes, sometimes athletes get away with, dare I use the figurative expression: murder (e.g. Matt Schaub). But for the most part, the fact that you can trust 95 % of UVa students to keep their word, to take exams home and not cheat on them, and to have certain privileges from the libraries is fantastic. I am sure some students come into the University with a laisez faire attitude about the Honor Code, but by their senior year, it has probably rubbed off that being in this environment is very unique. Imagine what the political system would be like if everyone had to abide by the rules and they could be booted out of office for transgressions? There may not be many politicians for one! But I digress. The Honor Code at UVa is very unique and it inspires an environment of, at the very least, like minded pursuit of high academic standards with a strong ethical framework. If you got your grades and admission in a my-daddy-is-rich-so-my-college-agent-can-do-anything sort of manner, then UVa is not for you. You will most likely be caught and then what are you going to do?

Second, UVa has a program known as AccessUVa. This program helped me out stupendously. Being older, I was able to apply to the University without needing to give them my parent’s financial info. And since I have been living on my own since I was 18, this was very “fair” and a reflection of my reality. And of course I was worried about how I would pay for school. I figured I would take out loans and get by with some grants. I applied for some scholarships as I did very well at the local community college. It turned out however, I did not need to worry. Through Access UVa, and with some small loans and grants, I got my entire, and I mean ENTIRE, two years of school including living expenses paid for. What a surprise to receive that financial aid statement! Was there an error? Should I really be getting so much money? Yep, it’s yours, just do well in school and you will get it again next semester. Whoa!… I think Access UVa benefits something like 18 % of their students, so if you are from a low income background but you have the academic skills and grades to get in, have no fear. 🙂

Finally, I want to say a little about the various programs at the University. When people think of UVa, without having attended school, what do they think? It was Jefferson’s University. Right. It has a strong School of Medicine and Law School. Right again. Oh and you might as well throw in the internationally renowned School of Commerce and Business (Darden). And you’d be right again. And of course, UVa is always ranked in the top ten in public universities in all of the United States. So what gives? Well actually I’d like to shine some light on a few other departments that do not get enough attention from the academic world.

I personally graduated with my BA in Psychology. So I got to explore many psychology courses, along with psycho-biology and neuroscience options. That was perfect for me. Plus, being a Buddhist practitioner, I also took classes in the Tibetan language and in Religious Studies. And I would point out that UVa is one of the only schools to have such strong Psychology, East Asian Language and Religious Studies programs in the U.S.! For instance, UVa just built an entire building to house their Religious Studies department. Can you imagine? For someone studying Buddhism, there are three or four options or areas in which to devote oneself at UVa – and how cool is that? (Indian, Tibetan, Chinese / Japanese Chan). Then when it comes to Psychology, who knew that UVa had one of the best programs in the country? UVa has about 30 fully tenured Psychology professors – so if you want to focus on Development Psycho, they have you covered, or if you prefer Social Psych, Family Psych or if you want to go into Cognitive Science, they have great teachers for you. And you know, it is starting to sound like someone at the University paid me to say all these things. Maybe that is something I should pursue… But so far, it has not happened yet. 🙂

And finally, if you are interested at all in learning a beautiful language, or if you are interested in Buddhism of any flavor, or if you want to work around the Himalayas at all, you should consider studying the Tibetan language. The Tibetan culture is one of the few indigenous cultures left on the planet, at least in its pure form, although if the Chinese have anything to say about this, it won’t last much longer. At any rate, the Tibetan language program at UVa is also incredible. Whether you want to go into Colloquial Tibetan, there is a world-renowned professor for that area, and / or if you want to go into more of the Classical or Literary Tibetan, then they have several professors who teach those classes. So check it out! (Now you see my real agenda.)

In conclusion, UVa may desire to join the ranks of the Ivy League colleges across the States, but in reality they are better than that. They have world-wide respect for many of their less traditional programs without needing the prestige of a name like Harvard, and they have some of the best traditional programs as well – just in case you wanted to continue the family trend of being a doctor or lawyer. And of course, if you want to go relax and enjoy some solid NCAA sports events, then you are also going to do well at UVa. Just sayin’.

And thanks for reading.

Medical Astrology*: Saturn in the 2nd house, Mars in the 8th cont’d (2011)

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore. Reproduction without permission is prohibited. Please see the “Astrology” page above for more info and for Kirby’s current rates. Thank you for visiting and please enjoy reading.

Please recall, that as I delve into the deeper health aspects, I cannot stress enough, that this information is purely for educational or entertainment purposes and that all individuals should consult with a licensed medical practitioner before making any changes to their diet, lifestyle or medicine intake. The author does not claim to treat, cure, diagnose or prevent any disease or illness.

Are you still with me? Excellent! If you are starting here, then I would suggest going back to the post entitled, “Medical Astrology 2011,” and read up from there. This is the fifth post in this series so go back and get context to grok this stuff!

I’m going to skip the review portion of this post, to allow for more fresh material, so I hope you are ready for a deeper plunge. Here we have Saturn in the 2nd house and Mars in the 8th, which as I mentioned previously can be associated with Taurus and Scorpio respectively.

So what does Saturn in Taurus bring us? See the previous post to see how the 2nd house and Taurus are correlated and that is how we got from Saturn in Virgo in the 2nd house to looking at Saturn in Taurus. And what does this mean from a health perspective? We need to keep in mind that there are subtle differences between interpreting Saturn in the 2nd and Saturn in Taurus, but again, for the sake of brevity, we are just diving into Saturn in Taurus from the health perspective: this can bring extra congestion in the throat (sore throats which I believe actually derive from a congested colon – there is a reciprocal relationship between opposite signs and here Taurus, throat, reflects Scorpio and its association with the colon), other throat or voice issues and hypothyroidism. So just to be clear, I believe that if we suffer from sore throats, it is a good idea to check the colon – are we constipated? Have we ingested many congestion-producing foods? Are we expressing ourselves or are we emotionally constipated? Etc.

Alright, and now for Mars in Scorpio. And again, just to be clear, this is the over-simplified version of Mars in the 8th house. In actuality, there are differences between Mars in the 8th and Mars in Scorpio, but for brevity’s sake, we are sticking with this: Mars in Scorpio can indicate any issues (inflammation, overexertion, or dysfunction) of any of the reproductive organs and glands, both male and female, it can indicate colon problems, it might represent a weakness for venereal diseases, it can indicate in rare cases hernias, and sometimes Scorpio issues can reflect (see the Taurus paragraph above) in issues involving the throat. So this is basically most of Scorpio’s areas of rulership being over-worked (Mars), taxed, stressed or of being in a weakened state due to other psycho-spiritual causes.

So pretty soon we are going to be able to put all this information together from the past five posts. We have touched on the personality dynamics, psycho-spiritual, and emotional correlates of Mars in Pisces in the 8th house opposite Saturn in Virgo in the 2nd, and we have begun to look into the physical manifestation of these energies. So in future posts, be on the lookout for how we bring all this information together.

And because I have a little more space in this post, I will touch on measuring the precision of Medical Astrology. This may involve me getting on my soapbox as I have some strong opinions about this subject. As I mentioned in the first post in this series, Medical Astrology can easily be faulted for being inaccurate (yet another reason not to go out and read Astrological-recipe books!!! Because you might be scared away from true exploration and learning). As we can see from this one aspect between Mars and Saturn, there are hundreds of possible results or combinations of physical manifestation of these energies. And to be more precise in my languaging – we should actually say that the Astrology Chart reflects the actual situation and not the other way around. Astrology does not cause anything! You cannot say, “Oh I have Saturn opposite Mars, so that causes blank.” Not good! Rather, I have blank happening in my body for any number of actual, empirically-provable reasons, and the Astrology Chart reflects that situation. Back to the opening topic, Medical Astrology can become more precise when we look at the whole Natal Chart. And then, when we bring in information from the client’s inherited health history, or environmental factors, and of course we gain even more information from the Timing Astrology.

If we see certain possible predispositions in someone’s Natal Chart, then when certain Transits or Progressions occur, we will have a sense of what might be manifesting in that person’s body. For instance, if someone does NOT have any predispositions for lung problems in their Natal Chart, and they take pretty good care of themselves, then, even if a challenging possible-lung-problem-representing Transit comes along, there will not be a lung issue. Does that make sense? What I am trying to say is that the body and its health is an incredibly complicated subject. So to try to narrow it down to saying, “Oh, you eat beets, so that means you will have eye problems,” is simply absurd. Just like trying to narrow Medical Astrology down to one or two aspects and then say how inaccurate a modality it is, similarly is absurd. Before we can truly judge the efficacy of something, we must be authentically open-minded to the possibility of it working. So give Medical Astrology a chance, and please, use its information to supplement what your licensed medical professionals tell you (yes, go see your doctor if you need to!).

Prayers for all beings as we approach 11/11/11

This post has a religious slant to it, as I am sharing a Buddhist prayer.

Today is a full moon, which in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition is an auspicious day to practice Phowa, do Amitabha Buddha (deity) practice, to confess our non-virtuous thoughts / words / and deeds and we can say the prayer that I am including below. From my limited knowledge on this subject, various days are more auspicious to do certain practices on because of the phases of the moon. I know on Full Moons, New Moons and Eclipse days, our practice is amplified. So perhaps this is apart of the reason.

Because I am not qualified to talk about Phowa, I am not going to. However, at present it seems that conditions in China are so horrifying that people (and even more tragically perhaps – monastics) are taking to protesting via self-immolation. How bad do conditions have to be before you start setting yourself on fire? Especially when you have taken vows to cause as little harm as possible, and to live as long as possible to benefit countless sentient beings? Good grief! It is a tragedy and I pray that this form of protests cease and are unnecessary. You know it is bad when the Chinese police in Tibet start carrying fire extinguishers. Hey – why not change the policies that seem to be the “cause” of the self-immolations? Instead of curing the symptoms, why not go after the root cause of the dis-ease? Ugh!

So here is an image of Buddha Amitabha (from dharmacorner.blogspot.com):

Amitabha Buddha with retinue

So if you want to chant this prayer, it is especially auspicious to do so today (and on all Full Moon days). It is also a lovely prayer to do at any time, maybe we can say it before going to bed.

It is recommended to say it three times. I am including the English translation and then the Tibetan transliteration below. If you don’t understand the Tibetan, then you should say it at least once in English to understand the meaning.

E Ma Ho! Marvelous! In the center is the Buddha [Amitabha] of Boundless Light.
To his right is [Chenrezig] the Lord of Great Compassion,
and to his left is [Vajrapani] the Lord of Powerful Means.
They are surrounded by an inconceivable assembly of buddhas and bodhisattvas.
Extraordinary limitless peace and happiness is the buddha field called Bliss-Endowed [Sukhavati].
When I and all beings pass from this life, may we be born there, unhindered by another samsaric rebirth.
Once born there, may we behold the face of the Buddha [Amitabha] of Boundless Light.
By the power of all the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions,
bless me that I may attain this aspiration without hindrance.
Tayatha Pantsa Driya Awa Bodha Naya Soha

By the way, from my limited knowledge, if we are fortunate enough to go to Sukhavati (Dewachen), the Pureland of the Buddha Amitabha, it is said that only beings who have attained some realization can actually see the face of Buddha Amitabha – the rest of us without realization would be folded comfortably in a lotus’ embrace, where we could still hear Buddhist teachings (and we could progress on the path). That is why the prayer auspiciously requests, “May I behold the Buddha’s face.”

Spiritual Astrology and Timing Charts: Transits and Progressions

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore. Reproduction without permission is prohibited. Please see the “Astrology” page above for more information and for Kirby’s current rates. Thank you for visiting and please enjoy other articles as well.

What is Timing Astrology?
Timing Astrology uses three or more branches of Western Astrology, known as Transits, Progressions and Solar Arc Directions. Transits compare the current placement of planets in solar system (from our perspective) with the location of the client’s Natal Chart, and the interaction between these planets reflects a variety of events, energies and psycho-spiritual reactions. Of course, in order to be more accurate when indicating the upcoming possibilities, the astrologer must get to know the client a bit. Then the client’s frequency or consciousness is included with the information from the Transit Chart to determine what will most likely arise.

Progressions (Secondary) use a system of gradually advancing the planets for the client’s age. Therefore, Progressions are a slower evolution and these energies tend to manifest through internal shifts and development. When the Birth Time is accurate (which is easy to check), the Progressions provide very accurate and insightful explanations about one’s psycho-spiritual evolution and transformation. Solar Arc Directions are another form of Progressions, and these charts add to the veracity of the interpretation. Solar Arc aspects are generally more subtle, but when they stack up, it indicates upcoming changes and reorientation.

What is possible with Timing Astrology?
When major planets in the Timing Charts make aspects to planets in the Birth Chart, we can glimpse what energy is involved. Certain planets represent expansion, others contraction, where yet other planets represent confidence, mental flexibility, physical energy, visionary abilities and more! There are often several aspects happening simultaneously when we include the Transits and Progressions, so a quality interpretation requires the astrologer to get to know the client. Yes there are many books out there that say, “X” will happen when “Y” aspects “Z,” and these books may be accurate occasionally, but there is so much to take into consideration (house position, other off-setting aspects, additional aspects in the configuration, etc) that a simple book of astrological recipes is bound to merely be oriented toward one type of individual – not the countless varieties of people out there!

Each astrological house (or section of the Natal Chart) represents a particular area of life. And the astrological ruler of each house, the ruler of the sign on that house’s cusp, reveals a lot about what is happening in that area of life. Therefore, in addition to the direct relationships that are discovered in a Timing Chart, we can also see behind-the-scenes as it were to look at the subtleties in each area of life. Hence one Timing Chart can reveal many layers of events, energetic shifts, circumstances and psychological re-evaluations occurring simultaneously!

How often should I look at my Transits and Progressions?
This really depends on the individual. If you are going through a rough stretch, which sometimes last a little while, you might want to have your Timing Chart done once every six months. And if you are really curious about it, you could purchase the Annual Astrological Weather Report which gives personal monthly updates which are unique to you and your chart and your present situation. However, I generally recommend for people to have their Timing Charts done once a year.

Personally, I like to glance ahead and look at what the upcoming year is indicating, and then basically forget about it – except for any challenging aspects. For those I take note and then make any necessary changes as a result (there are certain aspects which indicate increasing or decreasing physical energy for instance and I can make changes as a result of what I see). The only time I look at my Transit Chart with more than once-per-year frequency is when something unexpected occurs – although these unexpected events are generally not too spectacular because I have already looked ahead. But when these little surprises crop up, I look in retrospect to see what was happening in my chart to be informed about the energetic circumstances involved. This allows me to change my perspective regarding upcoming aspects through being educated about new combinations of aspects and their resulting possibilities.

Remember that I practice choice-oriented astrology, which means that certain possibilities will arise within the Timing Astrology charts, but what the client does with those possibilities is up to them. I will inform them of several possible choices, and of course there will be other novel reactions and ways of shifting with the astrological weather. So have your Timing Chart done today and look to see what potentials the future holds!

You can also look back at a difficult or confusing time when certain events unfolded for you but you are not sure why. Or you are not sure what lessons were present for you. The Timing Charts can easily go back to see what the past aspects had in store and this provides valuable insights about the situation and the time. You can look back to see what patterns were present and to learn from them, so that going forward, you can make changes that open your life to new, welcoming potentials.
