Progressed Moon in the 6th House

This is a post about a topic within Western Astrology, and as a result, I am writing for people who have a limited to moderate understanding of Western Astrology. Without such a background, you will still get something out of reading this, but you may not grok the slightly technical language. Specifically this post is about the Progressed Moon, which moves through the chart at approximately one degree per month, meaning it is in an Astrological House for an average of 26 – 30 months. Therefore we have small two plus year cycles as the Progressed Moon moves from sign to sign and from house to house.

The sign does make a difference. However, some of what I am about to describe will pertain to anyone’s Pr. Moon in the 6th House, no matter what sign it is in. There will be a recognizable difference though between a Pr. Moon in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) which resonates with the earthy 6th house, versus being in a less grounded sign like Pisces, Sagittarius or Gemini for instance.

So what does the Pr. Moon in the 6th house mean? Remember the Pr. Moon will be in the 6th house for at least two years and possibly closer to three years. It is a time of preparation. It is a time of completion. It is a time of increased self-discipline. And it is a time to relish resting in the discomfort of appropriate growth. In the following paragraphs, I will unpack each of these concepts further. A) Preparation, B) Completion, C) Self-discipline, and D) the Discomfort of Appropriate Growth.

It turns out that A) and C) go quite well together, and while we are at it, we should probably throw D) in that same mix as well. What do I mean? Well think about the Astrology Chart from a larger perspective. The 1st house through the 5th house reflects a time (or essence or energy) of Self-Orientation. And then, the 7th through 11th houses have to do with a more public, other-orientation if not community-oriented perspective (or energy or essence).

So where do we transition from a Self-Oriented perspective to a more community / other / public perspective? Well of course, the House of Bridging-Consciousness, and Maturity, and Discipline: the 6th house.

And then we can also take a more focused glimpse of the Astrology Chart, and compare the 5th house with the 7th house. Because, like it or not, the 6th house is intimately connected to both of these fun-loving houses. Unfortunately, in order to get from the 5th house to the 7th house, we must go through some significant changes… Ugh! Right?!

[By the way, the following description of the 5th and 7th houses, along with the succeeding discussion on Neptune, is overly simplified and drastically exaggerated to make a point. In reality, Western Astrology is a very complex subject and you should investigate it thoroughly if you are interested. Please don’t read this post out of the context of the larger astrological understanding and start making judgments about Astrology, your chart or others’ charts.]

The 5th house is the house of FUN. It represents Creativity – Artistic, Theatrical, along with Procreation (it is the house of children nonetheless – and making children can definitely be fun!). The 5th house also has to do with Gambling or Speculation – Love Affairs, that is the early stages of a romantic relationship; Having Children, as we never quite know to whom we are going to give birth; and of course Taking Risks – gambling with our body or with our money (or emotions), it all falls under this house’s influence. Basically the 5th house is the house of partying and living it up. It represents some of the best traits of Leo (fun-loving fire). The 5th house, like the lower frequencies of Leo, can be a very Self-Oriented house – how much money can “I” make with this risk? This love affair is fun (for me)! “I” am going to stay with it. But if it gets serious or dry, responsible and deeply-committed, forget it!

Then we have the 7th house, which, in some ways, is a polar opposite of the 5th. The 7th house is the house of Compromise, Union, Negotiation and being a mature, participating partner in a dyad (Partnering). Many astrologers, both traditional and contemporary call this the House of Marriage, with good reason. Because maintaining a marriage takes work (not that I know from personal experience, but I have closely observed healthy marriages – and they do not appear to be all ease and grace!), it takes maturity and the humility to admit that we make mistakes and taking responsibility – all the stuff the childish 5th house type detests! Making repair is a part of living. Expressing your boundaries is necessary in a healthy relationship, and when they are violated, repair is necessary!

So how do we get from this adolescent 5th house to the mature, responsible, vow-taking 7th? Well, yet again, I don’t have to tell you – we go through the nitty gritty process of growth and maturation in the 6th house. And when I say that you need to get used to the discomfort of growth, you may want to pay attention. And not only get used to, rather, we must start to relish the discomfort, sit in the flames of wisdom fire and allow the Creative to shape and mold us into a mature, responsible (hopefully wiser) being.

Refining is a good word to describe what is happening to the soul during this period, but I feel it is too graceful or soft a word to touch on the depth of angst and the death-struggle of wrestling with our ego that is possible when the Progressed Moon tenants the 6th house. And it needs to be intense to kick us out of our old, childish habits.

That is why people talk about the 6th house in a slightly dry or possibly dreadful way. It is not a bad thing to grow, but it is rarely ever comfortable! And if it is, either you started with incredibly positive karma or you are grossly deceiving yourself, and as a result you are setting yourself up for a series of nasty disillusionments as we speak. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…) But in reality, becoming more responsible, more reliable, more attentive to details and more mature are never bad traits. It just depends on where we are starting from as to how difficult a journey it is.

If we are younger when the Pr. Moon enters the 6th house, say between 18 and 30, then this could be the time of preparation for our first serious committed emotional / romantic relationship (or possibly our first and hopefully only marriage). And many of us are not that aware of who we truly are at this point, which means there might be additional relationships coming up in the future. But, if we seek out and listen to the advice which is readily available when the Pr. Moon is in the 6th house, then we have a chance to grow in many positive directions.

If we are more Neptunian types (lots of planets in Pisces, or in the 12th house, or if Neptune is making Hard Aspects to the natal Sun, Moon or Mercury), then the journey to become Grounded, Responsible, Reliable, and Mature in a worldly (positive connotation) sort of way will be more difficult. Because which planet detests being structured and contained? Think the foggy, watery essence of Neptune – it is the one planet that prefers to be in any other Creative World besides this one. Not to leave you Neptunian types in a lurch, I myself have heavy Neptune aspects (and Pisces Sun) in my chart, and through diligent work and with alert / relaxed awareness, one can become more embodied in the present, and more grounded in the world. It is possible! (See my previous posts for more.) But don’t expect it to magically happen on its own – you must put some effort into grounding and do your personal growth work, as no one else can do it for you.

Therefore, before we try to decipher what the Pr. Moon in the 6th house will mean, we must discern where we are coming from. How attached are we to our “me-first” ego (5th house)? Are relationships easier for us – can we be practical and express our needs with ease within them (some of the best traits of the 7th house)? Are we more at home in a creative timeless possibly substance filled evening (Neptune) or are we naturally more practical and responsible? And don’t get me wrong – there are people who need to get more in touch with their Neptunian sides (emotional intelligence, creativity, intuition, psychic abilities, compassion, empathy, etc). But there are people who err on the side of all of the above traits and who seem to be light-years away from pragmatic conduct. So discover who you are, where you are on your path, and then start to peel away the layers of the Progressed Chart and its interpretations.

[Edited Nov 2017: Reading through this post, I wonder how I did not mention the following about the Progressed Moon in the 6th house: if there is one Astrological house where you will clean up your act as it were, become more active in your lifestyle – go to the gym, start hiking, join a biking club, pick up that river kayak that has been sitting in your shed for 5 years, etc; this is a time when you will probably clean up your diet – you might start reading books on healthy bioflora, you might do a specific diet, but you will probably be more aware that you want to tidy up your eating habits, and you may even do a cleanse (see my posts about this topic however); and you might also add some other healthy habits of self-care during this time – maybe you will pick up yoga, qigong, tai chi, martial arts, walking daily, receiving a monthly massage or bodywork session etc. It is a time of moving toward health when Progressed Moon (or Sun or Mercury) pass through this area of the chart.]

Also, when I mention that an endocrine system is stressed, I am referring to the subtle energy. This could be the chi, the jing, (to use Chinese medicine terms) or it could be elemental energy that is out of balance. But either way, I believe our bodies are fairly resolute and fortified, so despite being stressed or depleted, we can continue to function fairly well in our lives. But if we know and recognize signs of stress, then it might be a good time to practice self-care.

Now to continue this thread. What transits and progressions can indicate a challenged kidney and adrenal (endocrine gland on the kidneys – responsible for adrenaline and other “fight or flight or freeze,” stress-response chemicals)?

First, what planets are in Libra or Aries? Is there any Natal pattern of sensitized kidneys? Saturn conjunct any personal planet (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars) in Libra / Aries would say yes. Perhaps Pluto and Uranus as well. Simply having a single planet in Aries or Libra may not indicate much in the Natal chart, but if there is ever a time of heightened transit activity to that planet, then it might be good to watch for over-working and exhaustion.

Second, do Mars and Saturn make a challenging aspect in the Natal chart? If so, this could indicate sensitive adrenals. Then, if this is the case, whenever this aspect is transited or contacted by a progressed planet (or Ascendant / Midheaven), it could reflect a time of heightened stress in one’s life.

Finally, what aspects do Mercury and Uranus make? Are they pleasant or trying? This will show how the nervous system of the individual is geared naturally. Do they react in fear (aspect to Saturn perhaps)? Do they have faith in life (Mercury in Gemini making positive aspects or Uranus in Aquarius / Scorpio making positive aspects or positive Jupiter aspects)? You’d need to take the house placements into account for this as well. This can also give a fascinating glimpse into how a person deals with stress.

Now to show some examples. And actually, if you don’t mind, I will use some examples from my Natal Chart, as I started out the initial post by saying that my system is taxed, strained, exhausted beyond description. I am feeling like resting down for a month solid, and maybe that would be enough to convalesce.

Here’s my personal recipe for a stressed adrenal system:
Tr. Venus conjunct Mercury in Aries
Tr. Pluto square Mercury in Aries
Pr. Mars conjunct Mercury in Aries
Pr. Asc opposite Mars (which is opposite Saturn in my Natal Chart)
Pr. MC square Saturn (and soon to square Mars)

So my Mercury is a singleton in Aries, barely aspecting anything else (which may makes its manifestations more eccentric and unusual). The important thing for this example is that it is in Aries (the reciprocal of Libra). And look at all those intense Mercury hits – only the Tr. Venus passed over it quickly, moving on to later degrees of Aries with a rapid pace. Tr. Pluto will be squaring Mercury for at least a couple years (off and on in terms of its strength). And then Pr. Mars will be sitting on Mercury for a solid three years (!!!) – ooph! Remember, Mars in conjunction with Mercury leads to driving swiftly (think Aries), and driving fast leads to stressing the kidneys and adrenals as well. So now is a good time to purposely drive slower and more mindfully.

Then I have in my Natal Chart, Saturn in Virgo opposite Mars in Pisces, which is presently getting activated by the two Progressed Angles of the Ascendant and the Midheaven. So having Saturn opposite Mars in a chart can mean different things on various levels – personality effects, health implications, psychological issues which need to be cleaned up etc. And of course the house placement and other aspects to this opposition need to be looked at. But, if nothing else, we can easily assume that Mars opposite Saturn will have some kind of effect on the individual’s ability to handle stress.

As I mentioned earlier, having Mars and Saturn in a hard (challenging) aspect, which includes the opposition, indicates a pattern of easily stressed adrenals. Think about this in a very basic way: Mars is the gas (pedal or throttle) and Saturn is the brakes (limitation and restriction). What happens when we hit the gas and the brake at the same time? The vehicle gets very confused, upset even! Likewise, Mars and Saturn are not the best bed fellows.

So, even after doing years of personal growth work (therapeutic) as well as somatic processing work (bringing the therapy into the body), there could still be an old pattern of stress that could be re-triggered if given the right conditions. And sure enough – when we are stressed at work (for someone else), and if we are trying to juggle a new relationship, if we are simultaneously processing health issues and attempting to keep a part-time self-employed job going… Well you get the drift!

Isn’t it incredible how insidious stress can be? We don’t notice all the little things stacking up until we are saddled with many little responsibilities. Then the body will start to show signs of being exhausted. In my next post in this series, I will review (some of these things I have already mentioned) some techniques, activities and supplements I take to rest down and calm down.

Thank you kindly for reading.

Hello Dear Readers,

First, I realize I need a website. And that project is next on my plate. I have started a Weebly account and will begin progress on a site shortly. However, until that is complete (and very professional / presentable), I will continue to post new developments here.

So work has been slowing down. That is, working for someone else in a job which is difficult on my body. It is a job which requires skillful charm and requisite patience and frankly, I am tired of it (it is waiting tables in an upscale golf-resort / fine dining restaurant). It was enjoyable in December when we were so busy the days just flew by, and the paychecks reflected that busy-ness, but no longer. Hence I intend to be of benefit to many people in a job that I enjoy, which is healthy for my body and which I can sustain with ease and grace.

As many of you may know by now, I have been working closely with the I Ching for the past three plus years, taking time to explore various interpretations of the Book of Changes and to develop a reliable relationship with it. By the way, when I throw the I Ching, I visualize my heart teachers (Tibetan Lamas) and wisdom beings (wisdom deities) present in front and above me, then I picture my question and then I throw the coins. Therefore, I hope that the advice I receive is actually a reflection of what is. I seek to penetrate through pretense and to get underneath what I want (deluded desire) to see the raw truth (sometimes uncomfortable) in that specific situation.

With that said, recently the I Ching gave me the green light to offer Astrology Interpretations to a larger audience. It said that this is a fruitful time for it, and that fruitful times also pass, so get started.

So here is what I am offering in regards to Astrology:
(please visit the Spiritual Astrology category and look at previous posts which describe what the following topics are)

For $125, I offer the following:

Full Natal Astrology Interpretation (90 minutes recorded interpretation) or

Complete Two Year Timing Aspects (90 minutes recorded conversation about the chart’s Transits, Progressions and Solar Arc Directions) or

Full Medical Astrology Interpretation with Medical Astrology Timing Aspects (90 minutes recorded interpretation)

Keep in mind, that while I have been studying Medical Astrology for six years, while also focusing on learning and providing healing facilitation through process-oriented bodywork; I am neither a doctor nor a licensed medical practitioner, so I do not claim to cure, treat, diagnose or prevent any disease. The Medical Astrology interpretation is for educational purposes only.

Relationship Astrology interpretation (90 minutes recorded interpretation) this includes the Chart Synnastry and a detailed explanation of the Composite Chart of two individuals.

For $90, I offer the following:

Relocation Astrology – Astro-carto-graphy and Local Space Astrology (one hour recorded interpretation)

Rectifying the Birth Chart – if the birth time is unknown, we use the process of Rectifying the Birth Time to work backwards using major events in a person’s life to match it up with the proper birth time. (one hour conversation to discern the correct birth time)

Finally I offer individual tutoring in Spiritual Astrology at the rate of $40 per half hour or $65 per hour. Learn how to discern a chart’s basic drives and patterns, look below the surface to see what a chart’s evolutionary background is and look to see how these traits are progressing through the individual’s life with timing aspects.

Again, please visit the Spiritual Astrology category on the right to see previous posts describing each of these areas of what I offer in detail. Also, if these rates are too high, I can compromise to find a good rate for both of us. Do keep in mind however that most of these offerings require three to four hours of my time – counting preparing the charts, reviewing them and then doing the actual recorded in-person or over-the-phone interpretation.

To contact me to set up an interpretation, call me at four three four (area code) four six five zero six zero three. Thank you.

While I have been trained in everything that I mention above, working with several astrologers and mentors over the past seven years, I feel that I excel in a few areas of astrological interpretation. Natal Astrology is the basis of all branches of Western (Spiritual) Astrology, so I feel very confident discussing the intricacies of an individual’s Birth Chart. Then I have spent the most time focusing on the Timing Aspects – the Transits, Progressions and Solar Arc Directions and I am good in the art of predictive astrology (within the bounds of Frequency-Based, Choice-centered Astrology).

Also, on a personal level, I have been seeking a romantic partner who inspires me to be a better human being, one with which I can have a co-creating, provocatively-transformative and an aligned-with-a-potent-spiritual-intention relationship. As a result, I have spent a lot of time looking at relationship astrology charts – primarily for clients professionally, and in my spare time. Therefore I particularly enjoy working with clients for Relationship Astrology interpretations.

And finally, as I have been studying multiple modalities of healing facilitation, such as Reiki Energetic Healing, Craniosacral Biodynamics and Visceral Manipulation, I am also intrigued with Medical Astrology. I find the human body to be a fascinating mystery, which when viewed through the lens of Medical Astrology, begins to be understood in new, dynamic ways. And as a result, I am very happy to do these interpretations with individuals.

I believe the astrological chart (the Natal Chart, the Birth Horoscope, etc) to be a snapshot of our gross karmas, at least in a nutshell. What do I mean? If you believe in reincarnation, great, if not, can you just pretend for a second? So we have past lives. Say there is unfinished business with other people, animals, enemies, locations, etc. And there is unfinished business with regard to our strong habits and predispositions. There may also be unfinished business with regard to certain cultures and belief systems. This all shows up in the birth chart. We reincarnate to clean up these various situations and strong inclinations, if they need to be cleaned up of course. If not, then we reincarnate to benefit others, which is not such a bad thing.

For the most part, especially here in the West, just about all of us share one massive shortcoming in common. We are stuck up in our heads. Meaning we are not in our bodies – it takes effort to be aware of our tummies, to be aware of our breath. We have to purposely slow down to get in touch with our body’s needs. Why is this the case? I’m not saying we are all suffering from this affliction. Luckily, there are teachers and sublime beings who lead others back home into their bodies. But for the most part, especially in less-than-conscious families and industries, people are just running around being aware from the neck up.

Well, as babies, we emulate those around us. Studies on mirror neurons shows that kids (0 – 7 especially) do what their caretakers do. (This is why it is vital for parents to walk their talk – no saying one thing and doing another and expecting their kids to honor their words! Getting off that soapbox now…) It is natural – we want to learn from our parents and become functioning teenagers and adults. Unfortunately, if the adults we are learning from have no clue what it is to be embodied… if they are just in their heads, out of touch with their hearts and bellies, well then what chance do we have as babies?

As babies, we seek to be as safe and comfortable as possible. To do so, we emulate our parents. If our parents are living a stressed, tight, rat-race-oriented lifestyle, then as babies we learn to lock up certain parts of our body. I mean, what is the point of having an open heart if it is just going to get hurt and wounded everyday? So we start to close certain parts of our breath, we tighten our shoulders, in a sense creating a natural defense around our tender, vulnerable areas. But is this really necessary? Well, at that young impressionable age, yes. As conscious adults with choices about how we carry ourselves, how we use our tools of consciousness and awareness, NO!

In this series of posts, I intend to go into the shadow side of each planet. What does it mean to have a challenged Mercury and how does that affect embodiment? Or Mars? Or Jupiter, etc?

I will ponder this subject for a few days and then post the next article in this series.

Thanks for reading.

Please recall, that as I delve into the deeper health aspects, I cannot stress enough, that this information is purely for educational or entertainment purposes and that all individuals should consult with a licensed medical practitioner before making any changes to their diet, lifestyle or medicine intake. The author does not claim to treat, cure, diagnose or prevent any disease or illness.

Are you still with me? Excellent! If you are starting here, then I would suggest going back to the post entitled, “Medical Astrology 2011,” and read up from there. This is the fifth post in this series so go back and get context to grok this stuff!

I’m going to skip the review portion of this post, to allow for more fresh material, so I hope you are ready for a deeper plunge. Here we have Saturn in the 2nd house and Mars in the 8th, which as I mentioned previously can be associated with Taurus and Scorpio respectively.

So what does Saturn in Taurus bring us? See the previous post to see how the 2nd house and Taurus are correlated and that is how we got from Saturn in Virgo in the 2nd house to looking at Saturn in Taurus. And what does this mean from a health perspective? We need to keep in mind that there are subtle differences between interpreting Saturn in the 2nd and Saturn in Taurus, but again, for the sake of brevity, we are just diving into Saturn in Taurus from the health perspective: this can bring extra congestion in the throat (sore throats which I believe actually derive from a congested colon – there is a reciprocal relationship between opposite signs and here Taurus, throat, reflects Scorpio and its association with the colon), other throat or voice issues and hypothyroidism. So just to be clear, I believe that if we suffer from sore throats, it is a good idea to check the colon – are we constipated? Have we ingested many congestion-producing foods? Are we expressing ourselves or are we emotionally constipated? Etc.

Alright, and now for Mars in Scorpio. And again, just to be clear, this is the over-simplified version of Mars in the 8th house. In actuality, there are differences between Mars in the 8th and Mars in Scorpio, but for brevity’s sake, we are sticking with this: Mars in Scorpio can indicate any issues (inflammation, overexertion, or dysfunction) of any of the reproductive organs and glands, both male and female, it can indicate colon problems, it might represent a weakness for venereal diseases, it can indicate in rare cases hernias, and sometimes Scorpio issues can reflect (see the Taurus paragraph above) in issues involving the throat. So this is basically most of Scorpio’s areas of rulership being over-worked (Mars), taxed, stressed or of being in a weakened state due to other psycho-spiritual causes.

So pretty soon we are going to be able to put all this information together from the past five posts. We have touched on the personality dynamics, psycho-spiritual, and emotional correlates of Mars in Pisces in the 8th house opposite Saturn in Virgo in the 2nd, and we have begun to look into the physical manifestation of these energies. So in future posts, be on the lookout for how we bring all this information together.

And because I have a little more space in this post, I will touch on measuring the precision of Medical Astrology. This may involve me getting on my soapbox as I have some strong opinions about this subject. As I mentioned in the first post in this series, Medical Astrology can easily be faulted for being inaccurate (yet another reason not to go out and read Astrological-recipe books!!! Because you might be scared away from true exploration and learning). As we can see from this one aspect between Mars and Saturn, there are hundreds of possible results or combinations of physical manifestation of these energies. And to be more precise in my languaging – we should actually say that the Astrology Chart reflects the actual situation and not the other way around. Astrology does not cause anything! You cannot say, “Oh I have Saturn opposite Mars, so that causes blank.” Not good! Rather, I have blank happening in my body for any number of actual, empirically-provable reasons, and the Astrology Chart reflects that situation. Back to the opening topic, Medical Astrology can become more precise when we look at the whole Natal Chart. And then, when we bring in information from the client’s inherited health history, or environmental factors, and of course we gain even more information from the Timing Astrology.

If we see certain possible predispositions in someone’s Natal Chart, then when certain Transits or Progressions occur, we will have a sense of what might be manifesting in that person’s body. For instance, if someone does NOT have any predispositions for lung problems in their Natal Chart, and they take pretty good care of themselves, then, even if a challenging possible-lung-problem-representing Transit comes along, there will not be a lung issue. Does that make sense? What I am trying to say is that the body and its health is an incredibly complicated subject. So to try to narrow it down to saying, “Oh, you eat beets, so that means you will have eye problems,” is simply absurd. Just like trying to narrow Medical Astrology down to one or two aspects and then say how inaccurate a modality it is, similarly is absurd. Before we can truly judge the efficacy of something, we must be authentically open-minded to the possibility of it working. So give Medical Astrology a chance, and please, use its information to supplement what your licensed medical professionals tell you (yes, go see your doctor if you need to!).

We have been looking at Medical Astrology of late, and in particular I want to continue a theme that I have been touching on. That is the example of a single aspect – Saturn opposite Mars. Who knew that you could get so much information from one little aspect? Heh. Well let me tell you! Actually this particular aspect is very rich and juicy – any aspect involving the 2nd and / or 8th house will reveal a lot of material. And with that said, if you investigate deep enough, any aspect in the chart, in any house can reveal a treasure trove of information. But we are going to stick with Saturn and Mars for today.

To review, we have discussed, at least in brief, the planets Saturn and Mars and what they can signify. We have touched on the signs they are tenanting (Virgo and Pisces respectively), and we briefly brushed on the houses involved – the 2nd and 8th in this case. So what you might ask is left? I would refer you, if you have seen the Star Wars movies, to the scene in episode VI I think where Luke Skywalker says, “So I am a Jedi…” And Yoda makes a very surprised noise – “OOEEwwwhhoohhhh!!!” Actually I would ask in retort, “what have we actually covered so far?!” Very little to be precise. We have just brushed the surface actually, so lets look a little deeper now. Let’s get into the health correlations of this aspect.

Oh, and for one related tangent, Mars in the 8th house CAN (but not always) indicate that the individual will have a premature death. Now before anyone freaks out, let me explain. Traditionally, the 8th house was associated with death. When 8th house energies are not confronted and remain fermenting under the surface as it were, then I happen to agree with this traditional dark fatalistic assessment. But when we do our psychological work, perhaps seeing a professional body-worker on a regular basis or receiving regular acupuncture, counseling or if we practice other forms of quality self-care, and we get clearer about our neuroses and our psychological predispositions, then we move beyond “being ruled by our stars” as it were and we move toward the greater understanding and wisdom which is represented by the 9th house. So, if we have Mars in the 8th house in our natal charts, there is very little reason to worry, provided we take responsibility for our incarnation and determine to make appropriate changes. For those of us out there who are still feeling like victims… Then some reflection would be in order.

If the 8th house Mars makes a hard aspect to Pluto, Saturn or Uranus, then we may want to investigate further, especially if it is a close aspect. Then sudden, unexpected (Uranus) death becomes possible, or a violent (Pluto) death becomes slightly more of a reality or poor health conditions is more of a reality (Saturn). But in all of these cases, you must look at many factors: how strong are these planets (according to their sign and house placement), how close is the orb involved, are these the planetary rulers of the chart (ruling the Ascendant sign) or the Sun ruler? Which houses do these planets rule? And we must look at positive aspects which would offset the risks indicated by these hard aspects. So do not let one little prediction or aspect get you worked up – if you are reading this post, it means you are on the path toward self-understanding and you care enough to investigate your situation. Next, you may care enough to make the requisite changes which will soften the implied difficulty in the aspect.

With that long-winded explanation of Mars in the 8th, in Medical Astrology, what do Mars and Saturn represent?
And as I get into the Health side of astrological analysis, please remember that we cannot separate these things. I have found that often times, the psycho-emotional issues associated with an aspect contribute or at least go hand-in-hand with the physical manifestations of these aspects. What do I mean by this? Well I believe that before we have physical manifestation of dis-ease, long before really, there is often times an imbalanced emotional issue or psychological misunderstanding. For instance, if we repress our rage about an early trauma for too long, then eventually that rage will need an appropriate avenue of expression. If we do not provide it with one, if we have some masochistic tendencies, then I guarantee that there will be some health problems as a result. In Visceral Manipulation (bodywork), we learn that certain organs can get loaded up with emotional charge, and without an appropriate healthy way to unload that organ, it will spill over and discharge in bizarre ways – think unexplained rashes, inflammation or idiopathic diseases (unexplained).

And another note – we are not ruled by our stars. Rather, the astrology chart is a reflection of our gross karmas (mental, psychological, physical, emotional, etc) and the chart reflects the physical elements that make up our body, hence we get so much information from the time one takes their first breath, a.k.a. the natal horoscope (birth chart).

Comprehensive Natal Chart Interpretation

Kirby will spend 90 minutes interpreting your Natal Birth chart. You can chat about any area that you like. This includes printed charts and it also includes about 30 minutes of preparation time! These are typically done on the phone, via Skype or in person if you happen to be in Virginia, USA.

With that said, in Medical Astrology, Mars is associated with the production of blood, blood in general and iron (red like the fiery God of War), the metabolism and physical energy, aspects of temperature regulation as you will see below (Mars challenges can indicate disease which result in fevers or chills), the left ear, the kidneys (see below for more), veins (although some would argue Venus has influence here as well) and along with Pluto, Mars shares rulership over the genitals and sex glands. Mars in the body is the fighter, and as a result I suspect it has something to do with both the red and white bloods cells as the white blood cells help to fight off infections and viruses. And these are just the basics! When we delve deeper, I wonder if Mars has some association with the spleen. And I believe it also “rules” the forehead and is associated with headaches in general (along with Aries).

Saturn, in Medical Astrology, is associated with the bones and in particular the knees and the teeth, the skin (along with the Moon and sometimes Venus), it is also associated with the kidneys (see below), the spleen, bladder, phlegm, and the gall bladder. Saturn also is associated with the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, helping to regulate sex hormones, bone and muscle growth. Saturn (think structure) is associated with the skeleton and bony structures in general. Again though, these are the basics of Saturn’s associations in Medical Astrology, so we are seeing how complex this subject can get. Because of Saturn’s association with Calcium, I would venture a guess that the parathyroid glands also come under Saturn’s rulership.

In addition, when we speak of both Mars and Saturn in hard aspect to one another, a competent astrologer should quickly notice that both of these planets are associated with the kidneys. And here is why: both are correlated with the adrenal glands. According to the late Isabel Hickey, she states with regard to the adrenal glands:

“the medulla hormone produces a secretion that can cause fear or flight [or sympathetic freeze]. This part of the adrenal gland is ruled by Saturn [and its hormones are the catecholamines – epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine]. The shell or cortex secretes another hormone giving pugnaciousness and combativeness [(Mars – it produces testosterone among other hormones)]. These are glands more directly connected to the impulse of self-preservation and the animal nature.” She goes on to state that the antidote to an afflicted Mars is lunar maternal nurturing and the antidote to an afflicted Saturn is the Venusian loving-kindness and generosity. (fromAstrology, A Cosmic Science, 1992)

With this connection of both planets to the kidneys, or in particular to the adrenal glands (which sit right on top of the kidneys), we see that Mars in hard aspect to Saturn almost always produces the possibilities of kidney issues. What are these? Headaches and lower lumbar back aches and pains (behind the kidneys) to start. And there might be a predisposition to other kidney issues as well.

So far, in this particular post, we have looked further at Mars in the 8th house, and we have begun to pick apart what Saturn and Mars mean in terms of physical health issues or associations. In the next post I will get into the medical astrology around the houses and signs involved.

Did you know, there was a time when doctors in the United States would tell you that to practice medicine without looking at the patient’s astrology chart was akin to doing malpractice? Well, believe it or not, it is true. Nowadays, disappointingly, I speculate that there are merely a small percentage of doctors who value the information that one can glean from an accurate natal horoscope (birth chart).

Due to my interest in and practice of Craniosacral Therapy, I have been interested in Medical Astrology for seven years. So when I started studying Western Astrology, whenever I came across a juicy tidbit about Medical Astrology I would always read it with joy and vigor. And I would often go back and look at charts of clients and family members to see if what it professed was true, and sure enough, it was usually right on.

What is Medical Astrology?
Medical Astrology is a branch of traditional Astrology. Just as various planets (energies) and houses (areas of life) of the birth chart correlate with different emotions, personality dynamics and different facets of life, so too do they correlate with different parts of the body and with differing systems in the body. For instance, Aries is associated with the head. Taurus is associated with the tongue and the throat (and the thyroid). Gemini, the sign of the twins, is associated with the shoulders, arms, lungs and oftentimes hands. And these associations with the body go on and on, covering all the signs of the zodiac, as well as the planets, and the houses of the chart.

What are the benefits of Medical Astrology?
A quality psychologist can give therapy for a number of psychological disorders right? We all know this to be true – authentic scientific research has proven this to be the case. But can a good psychologist determine WHEN those psychological disorders will come about? Probably not. And certainly not with their traditional training. Well this is one benefit of astrology. When an accurate chart is in the hands of a competent astrologer, then it is obvious that certain energies ebb and flow, expand and contract at differing times. And those times can be seen through the Transits and Progressions (of Timing Astrology). In fact, a competent astrologer can look at a Natal Horoscope and see the various possibilities which that individual has for their incarnation on many different levels, including physical manifestations.

Medical Astrology is not perfect. The critics of Astrology in general, and Medical Astrology in particular certainly have an argument when they say that Medical Astrology is not a precise science. Well this is true and I will be the first to say it! However, imagine that the body has, just to name an arbitrary number, 5,000 systems, organs and individual parts. That is a lot, right? What if Medical Astrology can help someone narrow down where an illness might appear from 5,000 to 20? And then, if we look at the client’s inherited health predispositions, that number might drop down to 5. So we have narrowed down the potential weak areas of the body from 5,000 to 5. Is that not a huge step in the right direction? And then, if we look at aspects which are stacking up in their chart, then we can be more precise. To continue the example from above, if we see Saturn issues, plus Venus issues, plus a hard aspect to the Moon, what area of the body do all of these planets share in common? The skin! So we could very easily predict that there would at the very least be skin sensitivities during a certain time period.

How does one get started studying Medical Astrology?
Honestly, the best astrology books are more on the comprehensive side. Here is an example: when we look at an astrology chart, all we see are strange glyphs (planetary symbols), 12 sections a.k.a. astrological houses, and colorful symbols which represent the signs of the zodiac. Of course most people will recognize the crescent shaped Moon, or the female symbol of Venus and the male symbol of Mars. But beyond that, an astrology chart is VERY complicated, or it just looks like a flat piece of paper.

How does that flat chart translate to so much information about an individual? Two things – first we need to spend time studying and practicing astrology with a competent teacher to see how the same aspect will have various manifestations across different people. If we start out by reading books that say, “Pluto trine Saturn will lead to blah blah blah.” Then if we go around stating, as equivocally as we can muster, “Oh you have Pluto trine Saturn, that means you will experience blah blah blah!” Then we need to spend time weeding out the astrological-cook-book-recipes from our belief systems. We need to spend time opening our hearts, that way we can approach everyone we see as a blank slate. For instance, because His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a Sun sign Cancer. Does that mean he will experience the same reality as most of the other Sun sign Cancer’s on the planet? Doubt it.

As to my example, take the following aspect, Saturn in Virgo opposite Mars in Pisces with Saturn residing in the 2nd house and Mars tenanting the 8th. How much information can we glean from this? Of course we must take other aspects of the chart into consideration, but here are some personality traits we can infer from this planetary aspect: Saturn, representing contraction, limitation, boundaries, caution and discipline, can put a damper on Mars (the opposition aspect) where Mars rules aggression, assertion, competition, and the initial drive to get what we desire. Mars is often known as the gas (think gas pedal in a car) and Saturn is known as the brakes – this combination of gas plus brakes is rarely ever easy to deal with. This much we know simply from the planets involved.

But how do the signs come into play? How do those houses affect this particular aspect? And how close is this aspect – is the orb of opposition 2 degrees (very close) or is it 8 degrees (a wider orb). This information is important! This is why it is imperative to discuss your astrology chart with someone competent. Unless we are looking to be entertained, why would we seriously consider the words of an amateur green practitioner, who might not be aware of their personal neuroses, let alone ours???

Back to my example, what else can we infer from that aspect, with those positions involved? Saturn in Virgo (an Earth sign) often means a strong Saturn, indicating a serious, detail-oriented, efficiently-working, clear and mentally-organized individual. This is a person who needs to cultivate a sense of humor and lightening up. And then this info must be blended with Mars in Pisces – Mars, a fiery, fierce energy to start with is heavily watered down and weakened by being in Pisces (while this is true traditionally, chart position and other aspects might change this fact). Pisces is a laid back, mystical, patient, emotional energy – and Mars is not really comfortable in any of these arenas. Therefore, Mars in Pisces drowns out the typical drive for power and ambition, it dampens the typical Martian energy, possibly indicating a lowered constitution and possibly a slower metabolism (again though, look to the rest of the chart to confirm or deny these traits). Mars gets confused easily in Pisces, indicating a restless type of individual, and Pisces sensitizes whatever it contacts, so drugs and alcohol are dangerous for individuals with this placing. So far, we have only touched the surface on Mars being opposite Saturn.

In the following post, I will go more in depth on this particular aspect.
