Prognosis: shingles, so far (and the astrology of shingles)

As you, the reader, may have noticed, five days ago I was dreading having my first root canal done. Thankfully, for better or worse, the root canal may not be necessary. But I have since been diagnosed with the painful temporary condition known as shingles. I plan to post a little “shingles journal” or timeline after this, but in this post I will explain how the astrological aspects I described earlier could be misinterpreted to say root canal, but in actuality, it is a much clearer shingles picture.

What are the aspects again? Using a three degree orb, I will mention major aspects that have occurred in the past three weeks. I am excluding Lunar transits due to their very brief time in orb. Transits: Sun conjunct Mars, Sun opposite Saturn, Mercury conjunct Mars, Mars conjunct Mars, Mars opposite Saturn, Mercury station on square Neptune / trine Uranus, Saturn trine Mars, Pluto square Mercury withdrawing, Uranus conjunct Mercury approaching, Chiron opposite Saturn, Chiron conjunct Mars. Progressions: Moon square Pluto, Sun square Jupiter, Venus conjunct Sun, Mars conjunct Mercury.

Why tooth issue?  Well because some of the early symptoms of these shingles, before the rash and sores started forming was tooth and jaw pain.  Astrologically, why tooth issue?  Saturn rules the hard bones / tissues of the body, including teeth.  And if you peek at the above transits again you will see Sun opposite Saturn, plus Mars and Chiron opposite it.  In addition, with the Progressed Moon squaring Pluto (decay, festering under the surface) I figured there might be a chance of a tooth problem.  Not that I would base my medical health on my chart, but it can be a way of verifying the facts.

In reality though, once the rash started showing up last Tuesday, I knew it might not be a root canal problem, especially once my ear started hurting so badly.  Astrologically, why shingles?  Mercury rules the nervous system in the body (along with Uranus), and Mars has to do with the head (Aries rules the cranium, and I would assume it would play a role with cranial nerves).  Look at how many aspects above have to do with Mars and / or Mercury!  Nearly all of them!

Sun conjunct Mars – a brief yet necessary aspect for “sparking events,” this can be a catalyst aspect.  Usually MINOR aspect.  When this aspect occurs, if the window for karmic ripening is open, you can expect something to happen.  Not to be fatalistic or anything, because remember for more karmas, we can shift how heavily they manifest, but around this time of year (it will always fall in the same week every year), I try to watch my chart to see if I should do extra purification practice or if I should rest down more than usual.  The only other time something MAJOR happened when the Sun crossed Mars for me was in 2002 and it may have played a role in reflecting my situation at the time – having an infected appendix which needed to be removed.  But the major aspect which indicated karmic heaviness at that time was Pluto squaring my Nodes.

Sun opposite Saturn – for me this always occurs simultaneously with a Mars aspect as well.  This is also a minor aspect by itself.  However it might indicate a time where the immune system is lowered, whether because of overworking, or stress, or sickness, etc.

Mercury conjunct Mars – probably should have been more aware of the rare nature of this aspect this time around.  Due to Mercury Retrograde, it will cross Mars three times in five weeks.  A very minor aspect typically.  Usually indicating a day or so of increased nervous energy and mental capacity.  However, due to the Retrograde motion, I suspect this might be indicating a time of stressed out nerves.  And probably cranial nerves in particular (Mars = Aries = cranium).

Mars conjunct Mars – usually a minor aspect also.  However, this can be a time for asserting yourself, airing any conflicts which have been swept under the carpet and for having more self confidence.  Just don’t get into a contest of egos.  Again, too much energy to process perhaps when considering everything else happening in my chart.

Mars opposite Saturn – this can sometimes be a rough couple of days.  This represents hitting the brakes and the gas peddle at the time same time!  So you can feel a true inner conflict when this is in place.  I don’t know I felt it externally, but I think it could have added to my psychic stress level.

Mercury station (Retrograde) on square Neptune / trine Uranus – the “Shadow” is the point where Mercury stations retrograde and some astrologers say that it does not officially come out of retrograde until it crosses back over this point.  If this is true, then Mercury retrograde lasts at least another 2 weeks beyond when it actually starts moving direct.  Personally I don’t know how much water this theory holds.  However, I do put some emphasis on the point of the shadow when it makes Hard aspects to other planets.  In my case here, it certainly does this.  I put emphasis on this point because the Shadow lasts at least five and a half weeks – from the moment Mercury stations retrograde to the day it crosses back over this point.  Therefore we have this influence subtly ongoing for that entire time.  Even now I believe I am feeling Mercury retrograde’s “effect” more strongly because of this Shadowy activity.  Mercury square Neptune – confusion or delusion or deception or falling back on old patterns which may not serve me any longer, a.k.a. computer games are tempting me once again.  Mercury trine Uranus – typically a time of increased creativity, but in this case, it could be too much in the way of nervous system activity.  Who knows?

Saturn trine Mars – this aspect has been in place for weeks now for me because Saturn takes about a month to fully station retrograde, then it starts moving Rx after another three weeks…  So this is still going on for me, two months after it started.  Saturn trine Mars is the workaholic aspect.  We have extra energy, we have extra motivation to achieve our goals, we might even be more ambitious.  However, we still need to remember that we are humans and we need self care and rest and some relaxation time.  With this aspect in place, you will not really feel like going for a night on the town very often (if at all).  If stress causes shingles, then this aspect certainly will add to stress levels.  By itself, we can handle it.  But throw on some other tough aspects and suddenly our body might shut down for mysterious reasons if we don’t relax enough.

Pluto square Mercury – this is fading.  However, it is still a strong fulcrum on my planet ruling the central nervous system.  I have been doing lots of emotional processing around birth work, trauma resolution, etc.  This could be another “reason” for getting the shingles.  A lot of times trauma resolution work will manifest through the skin.  And if the body is overloaded with integration requests…  then there might be a mysterious malady which forces us to the slow down and get the rest time we so desperately need.

Uranus conjunct Mercury – if there was one aspect I would put my finger on and say, “here is the bastard!”  That is, I am not saying this aspect “caused” my affliction.  But this aspect definitely applies pressure on the nervous system, whether through stressful outer environments, or stressful inner work, or another reason, we will probably feel stretched and worn out after this aspect resolves.

I think that is all I want to write today.  The only other aspect I would point to and say, “yet another potential shingles aspect” would be Pr. Mars conjunct Mercury.  With Uranus moving into this exact same position, this seems like a recipe for some sort of nervous system ailment.  Not guaranteed.  I certainly did not expect it.  For me, typically, I am lucky in how my karma manifests.  I have to thank my karma every day.  I am born in a human body where I can do authentic spiritual practice.  I have a functioning brain, which allows me to make positive choices.  And I have incredible support around me in the form of friends and family and spiritual mentors / teachers.  So what can I possibly have to complain about?  🙂    I might have a little complaint about the painful nature of shingles, but otherwise I am doing okay.

On the verge of overwhelm, please rest down, message from body

I could post an entire series on Mar’s transits and particularly on other planet’s transits to the red planet. However, as my time is a bit limited these days, what with working 50 hours per week, I am going to focus on a peculiar situation I am presently facing.

Here is a list of aspects that have either happened within the past week or that are still ongoing now. I use a three degree orb, nothing too wide and flaky, but there will be plenty for me to use nonetheless. Transits: Sun conjunct Mars, Mars conjunct Sun, Pluto square Mercury, Uranus conjunct Mercury, Saturn trine Mars, Saturn sextile natal Saturn, Jupiter square Mars (approaching s quare Saturn too and Mars sort of pulls this into effect), Moon conjunct Neptune, Mercury retrograde thru my 8th Piscean house, Mercury conjunct Mars. Progressions: Mars conjunct Mercury, Sun square Jupiter, Venus conjunct Sun, Moon square Pluto.

So what is happening right now? I am resting as I prepare for a root canal surgery on Thursday. Pain meds are needed to do anything except lie here, including to sleep.

Which aspects above was I “dreading” the most? Believe it or not, it was the Sun conjunct Mars transit, along with the Pr. Moon square Pluto piece. You might ask, Why not the transiting Pluto / Uranus hard aspects to Mercury? Well I think they play a role in my situation, but the Solar transit and Lunar progression are buggers. They also do not repeat themselves thru retrograde motion. Which is what is occurring with both transiting Uranus and Pluto – they are contacting Mercury again for the second or third time.

The Saturn trine Mars piece, with the hard transits to Mercury led to me overworking my body. We are understaffed at work, which means I am earning a bit more money, but I am putting in tons of overtime, which is now too much. I am burnt out. Then the Solar and Lunar aspects come along, the Moon squaring Pluto and providing a window for negative karma to manifest and the Sun / Mars piece is the spark, the catalyst for suffering. Or you could say I have not expressed my anger / irritation enough and this infected tooth is expressing suppressed resentment for me. But I disagree. I have been shifting over the past few months to express my angst better, so I think it was just the perfect storm. Plus my body needs a break from work and this pain is providing just that.

So I’m not trying to “blame” my needing a root canal on my astrology, but it is fascinating to see how our lives are reflected in the stars. In reality, when there is a deep filling like I have, there is the chance that bacteria can slip under there and start to eat anything else under it as well. So there is certainly a scientific explanation. But having poor teeth certainly shows up in my chart (Mars opposite Saturn Pisces / Virgo, Moon conjunct Pluto in Libra). So we know what might be weak, so when the body is overwhelmed, we know what might breakdown first.

And understanding can bring preparedness and / or peace of mind.

Upcoming Regression possible

This coming Friday Feb 22nd, the Sun will be conjunct transiting Neptune. By itself, this can be very minor. However, this is occurring at 3 degrees of Pisces, so if you have planets at the early degrees of Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), then this could be a day dreamy couple of days.
Then Mercury is officially retrograde on Saturday, the following day. But, Mercury has already started slowing down in the sky as it preps to station Rx. Therefore, we can all expect a bit of added distractions and delays prior to and around this weekend. This is especially true for people born in 1978, ’79 and ’80. This is because those of us born at that time have Natal Neptune at 18-21 degrees of Sagittarius, meaning Mercury will turn Rx at the square point to Natal Neptune. So time for double checking appointment times, directions and recipes is upon us.

What do I recommend as an antidote? Hang out with really practical people. Call up a life coach who you really resonate with. Do some mindfulness meditation. Rest down extra – take a day off of work or sleep in on the weekend. Leave early as we can expect delays. Drive carefully knowing others may be making poor decisions or being easily distracted. Smile. Laugh!

Know that this too shall pass, so enjoy the moment.

Process Workshop Complete, still stewing

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore.  Reproduction without permission is prohibited.  Thank you for reading!

I finished the birth process workshop with Myrna Martin, which I would highly recommend to anyone (especially anyone with known trauma and who has done at least a little bit of work on themselves through therapy / bodywork / acupuncture / etc.  In fact, I am even applying for the upc0ming training which she will be leading starting in April!  Wow!  I did not see that coming!

However, I learned so much about what babies, fetuses and parents need, especially in that critical stage of conception to age seven, that I want to spend as much time with Myrna as possible.  She is a true gem, a gift and I’d even say, a treasure.

In the process workshop, everyone had a profound experience (I believe) and we were all in awe of how Myrna kept the process slow, contained and completely safe.  We all dropped into deeper trust and comfortable contact with each other.  And I gained incredible new insights into my personal history as a newborn (and before and after).

I am exceptionally glad I committed to doing this work!

Opening to channel, moving toward completion

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore.  Reproduction without permission is prohibited.  Thank you for visiting!

As I wrote in a previous stream of posts, I have slowly been working with the book “Opening to Channel” by Sanaya Roman.  This is a very safe, gradual and potent approach to the subject of channeling as I have mentioned.  However, I wanted to post my experience from early January when I went through some of the final exercises in the book.

Below you will find a recording of me describing what occurred when I completed one exercise in particular.  It was pretty amazing!  Unfortunately, these days I am working a lot, and seeing clients on the side and prepping for graduate school in California (where I will move in August).  So I don’t have much extra time, if any at all.  Therefore, this little post and recording will have to suffice for the moment.  I hope it brings some modest benefit to others.

I have not actually started channeling yet.  However, I am getting glimpses of that possibility as my guide works to strengthen our connection (and my faith and confidence).  Plus I am having clearer and clearer experiences when working with certain crystals.

Thanks for reading!

Birth Process Workshop

Just a quick update here.

Next week I am starting a birth process workshop with a wonderful group led by Myrna Martin.  I have heard these are extremely potent as each person will have the chance to be re-born (go back through the big blue “birth” tunnel) and we will have at least three hours each to process whatever arises as we “re-experience” birthing.

Actually, I have been working so much (hence the lack of posts), that I am really looking forward to the reprieve.  I will have five days off of work, with four of those taken up with birth processing.  Whoof!  It has been a full few months for me.

Are you noticing that too?  It seems like the wisdom beings and guides are extremely active right now, providing support and wisdom for anyone who asks for it, which can also provoke and cultivate positive growth and change.  Wowsers!

I will probably report on my experience of the process workshop.

Until soon!

Prior to Losar: Purification Time

This material is copyrighted by M Kirby Moore.  Reproduction without permission is prohibited.  Thank you for visiting!

February 10th, 2013 is the Chinese and Tibetan New Year.  I do not know much about the Chinese New Year rituals, but I will mention what little I know about the Tibetan practices.

Losar (“Lo” is Year and “Sar pa” is New), so Losar is the New Year.  First of all, the 10 days prior to Losar are considered a time for cleaning and purification.  Many people (Tibetans especially) spend these days cleaning their homes inside and out and hanging new prayer flags.  Also, they purchase new clothes in preparation for the New Year celebrations.  These tens days are called Don (Tone – Wylie spelling is bton), at least I think as I cannot find a lot of info on this.  I learned about it from one of my Tibetan language teachers who had been a monk in Nepal.

For some people, the Don period is a time for doing significant Dharma protector practice or Vajrasattva practice as these practices can produce an auspicious new year and / or purify the old stuff and prepare the way for a productive future.

Then, I think in response to the ten day period, the ten days after Losar are considered extraordinarily auspicious as these are the days which celebrate the ten days of miracles when the Buddha supposedly defeated many sorcerers and local priests in contests of miracles.  From what I have heard, the second best practitioner was only able to keep up with five miracles compared to the Buddha’s ten.

So these days of purification and clean up time starts today (January 31st) and they will end on the eve of February 10th.  This is a time to try to be as virtuous as possible and if you know any practices for purification, then you can do these (if you want or feel the need).  Also, if nothing else, this is a good time to clean house, as some days it is too cold to enjoy doing anything out of doors.

Lord Jigten Sumgon’s promise – Mahakala – crows – event when receiving bodywork and mentioning the connection to the Lama

This was a full day for me. I bought a new car, which considering my history of ascetic thriftiness, is a big change. It’s a Corolla, so relatively cheap, reliable and good gas mileage. But I received a very obvious and auspicious sign this morning, prior to visiting the Toyota dealer, while I was receiving bodywork.

I was receiving from Jackie Emm, who is a very skilled and competent bodywork practitioner on top of having a soothing and healing presence and a soft, kind heart. Anyway, we started talking about Buddhism, and because we recently experienced the passing of a mutual friend, we spoke of Buddhism’s thoughts on death.

Let me pause a second for context and say that I have a connection with a Buddhist protector known as Mahakala (who has a connections with graveyards, death and transformation) and I have read that one of Mahakala’s symbols is the crow or raven. In Tibetan, Mahakala is known as the Great Black One (as I’m not sure if there is a word for midnight blue), so it seems fitting that Mahakala’s bird would be black and have to do with death and transformation.

With that said, Jackie was doing some energy work with my heart as I told her, “it is good you have a connection with Janet [Evergreen – another dedicated Buddhist practitioner] and I.”

“Why?” She answered. I have established a solid, trusting professional friendship with Jackie, so I felt it was okay to share what I am about to say next:

I said, “because if you have a strong connection with a serious Dharma practitioner, then you can think of that person at the time of your death. And due to their connection with authentic root and lineage lamas, you will be protected on your journey after you die.” And I am not joking here, as I finished saying this, a large crow flared its wings right outside the window as it flew by and I said, “the Dharma protectors are here.” And then the crow landed on the lamp post outside the other window and proceeded to caw toward us. I mentioned, more to myself than her, “Mahakala is right there!”

Considering Jackie had been really close with our friend who passed away, she admitted that she had asked for a sign as well. And, personally, I suspect Jackie is an old soul and a secret Bodhisattva. So the protectors revealed themselves, whatever the reason. And I had a great treatment as usual.

Opening to Channel, pt. 4

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore.  Reproduction without permission is prohibited.  Thank you for visiting!

As I mentioned in previous posts on this topic, I have been working with the book “Opening to Channel” by Sanaya Roman.  This is a potent book which can be a great resource if you are ready and willing and committed to open to growth-0riented transformation.  In previous posts, which I would recommend you go back and read if you have not already, I mention a bit of an introduction to channeling and to this book in particular.

After having introduced who the guides are, what channeling looks and feels like, in chapters six through ten, the authors next introduce exercises to move toward channeling.  I was pleasantly surprised by the effects of these meditations.  For instance, the first meditation is one that I skipped due to my personal meditation practice (I have been doing Tibetan Buddhism meditation techniques since 2005).  But I would definitely recommend it for anyone who does not have much experience with meditation or mindfulness.

Then the next meditation is called “Holding a Focus and Concentration.”  I did this meditation once and I was again surprised because it felt a little like some metta-loving-kindness meditations I have done with Buddhist teachers.  In this meditation you focus on one positive quality which you would like to bring more into your life – for instance love, compassion, joy or peace.  Then they guide you through the process of sitting with it, asking poignant questions about what your life would look like with more of that quality in abundance and then they coach you through feeling it.  Quite potent, so they only recommend starting out with five minute segments.

Having my previous experience with meditation, I was not blown away yet by any of the meditations introduced in the book up to this point.  And actually, at first I skipped over the next meditation (in error, thinking it was petty).  Then after talking with a friend who channels, they said that I should definitely give it a try.  The meditation is called “Attuning with Life Force Energy.”  In this meditation, you sit for a while, get calm and centered.  Then when you are ready, you pick up a crystal and just sit with it for a few minutes.  You sense into the crystal, attempting to get a response or an impression from doing so.  Once you have tried for a while or once you receive impressions, you pause, take a rest and then you do the same thing again with another crystal.  They recommend trying it with an amethyst and a quartz.

This is where I started to be amazed.  Yes, I have been trained as a scientist believe it or not.  So the empirical part of me baulked at communicating with a crystal – seriously??  But sure enough, once I quieted my mind and my heart, I definitely got a response from the amethyst.  It told me I was holding it too tight.  And yes, that information came to me as quite a surprise!  Then it told me that in future sessions together it would tell me who and what it specialized in healing.  Again, further information that I did not expect.  I have known for some time that amethyst is considered by many cultures as having healing qualities, but to communicate directly with a deep, dark purple crystal?  Wow!

When I tried this exercise with the quartz crystal, I did not get such a direct message, but I definitely understood that the quartz was a type of recording device.  It indicated that if I put a quartz crystal in a room, I can get a sense of what has been happening around the crystal by connecting with it later.

The next exercise is called “Trance Posture and Position.”  I am not a fan of the word “trance” in this context.  I think it connotes a loss of consciousness.  But this is not true in the least.  For me, I did this meditation and I was amazed at what I experienced – it felt about as good as any Mahamudra meditation (spaciousness) I had done up to that point.  And in my “trance,” I stayed present in my body and in my consciousness.  And by this point, one is getting closer to channeling.

I would recommend that if you have difficulty with any of these exercises that you take your time with them.  Try them again a few days later.  Give yourself time to rest.  For me, I think I may have had a bit of a leg up – especially considering I have encountered the guides and light-beings in the past when I had my appendectomy surgery.  Plus I have been meditating for quite some time now.  And to top this off, in 2003 and 2004, I explored shamanic journeying and I experienced very easy rapid results from journeying down into my lower world.

I do want to be explicitly clear here though.  I do not equate channeling one’s guides with shamanic journeying.  For me, they are incredibly different – almost completely.  When we do a shamanic journey, we do not know who is going to show up.  Sure, we can intend to work with high guides or with guides who want to benefit of and others.  And yes, we may even attract a higher guide.  But how can we know that this is the guide with whom we made our plan before we took incarnation?  For me, shamanic journeying was insightful and fantastical, but it was not as empowering as I find working directly with my higher guide(s) to be.

I will pause here and continue soon with the next exercises from the book and with my responses to them.

Thank you for reading!

Opening to Channel, pt. 3, continued intro

This material is copyrighted by M. Kirby Moore.  Reproduction without permission is prohibited.  Thank you for visiting!

If you are starting out with this page, please go back and read the previous two posts as I introduce my personal process of wrapping my head around the concept of channeling.  You will get more background information that way.  Enjoy!

So up to this point I have introduced the topic of channeling one’s guides.  And I have explored my personal hang-ups with channeling.  And I am continuing to gradually work through the material.  So now I will start to get into the book and my personal process with doing the exercises described within its marvelous covers.

The book “Opening to Channel” by Sanaya Roman is quite a positive and potentially life-changing resource.  At first, I noticed great reserves of resistance and fear around the idea of working with my guides, but now I am slowly coming around to the possibility that I might just be able to do it!

What are some of those fears I noticed?  Well, easy.  I was worried that I would be “taken over” by a guide and I would forget everything from the session.  This idea of loss of control is incredibly scary to me.  But thankfully in the first few chapters of the book, Roman and fellow author Duane Packer, dispel many fears and mistaken beliefs around the concept of channeling.  I was also worried that working with high-frequency guides would lead to my health starting to become frail or to unravel because I do not like the idea of a huge disparity between frequencies passing through my body.  As an analogy, think about life as most of us know it, to be like walking around our environs and the worst shock we ever experience to be like shuffling your feet on a thick carpet on a dry winter day – you can generate a painful spark and shock just using static electricity right?  Well, I figured that channeling must be like sticking a metal crowbar into a high-voltage transfer station – not quite getting struck by lightening – but definitely enough to permanently change your world.  Was I right?  Nope.

Like I was saying, in the first five chapters, Roman and Packer unpack what exactly it means to channel a high-frequency, loving, compassionate guide.  And do you know one of the things that sold me on the work?  As I was reading the channeled section of the book (Roman and Packer channeled much of the meaty portions of the book), their guides said that if you are working with a higher guide, then that guide should always wish you unconditional love, compassion, joy and peace.  And guess what the four immeasurables are in Buddhism?  Loving-kindness, skillful compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity without indifference.  I was sold!

In the first five chapters, the authors cover, who are the guides?, what is channeling?, what is conscious channeling?, what is channeling in trance?, what does channeling look like?, what is the difference between a high-frequency guide and a lower entity?, etc.  They effectively dispel many mistaken beliefs right there in the first few chapters.  And thank goodness, or someone like me would put the book down!

Then they cover the getting ready to channel material.  And I think this is where I will take a break for today (three posts might be enough for now).  In my next post, I will describe my experience of going through their exercises for this potentially life-altering material.
