Metta means loving-kindness in Sanskrit. Loving Kindness is one of the four immeasurables in Buddhism, along with Compassion (skillful methods), Sympathetic Joy and Openhearted Equanimity. I came up with Metta Reiki in response to slight short comings I continue(d) to notice in the traditional system of Reiki enegetic healing. I have been practicing, offering Reiki sessions and teaching, as a certified Teaching Reiki Master since 2004. However, as I furthered my bodywork repertoire, through Cranio Sacral Therapy, Zapchen Somatics, Visceral Manipulation and meditation practice, I began to see traditional Reiki as vague and not explaining enough about what was specifically happening with the healing process. See below for more on this topic. Therefore, along with continuing to respect traditional Reiki masters, it is my intention to offer tools for self-care and embodying well-being, and for deepening awareness as a body and of the healing process in general, while simultaneously including some of the primary Reiki techniques.
Metta Reiki combines traditional Reiki techniques with Zapchen Somatics (simple exercises for well-being), Buddhist mindfulness techniques, Cranio Sacral Therapy techniques and awareness along with exercises for exploring the multiple layers of kindness to self and other.

Students have been very pleased when they have gone through workshops, as I place a strong emphasis on Self-Care – getting in touch with our needs, attempting to meet these needs appropriately and kindly, finding alignment and resting there.
I come across people who have some background in spiritual or healing practices who do not seem to set appropriate boundaries, who do not seem to practice kindness to themselves (do not practice good self-care) and / or who burn out after a relatively short period of time. I want people to learn to listen deeply, to slow down and feel their body’s needs and respond from a space of ease and alignment. In order to practice kindness to others, we must first practice kindness to ourselves. As Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
If you care to, peek in the Metta Reiki category to the right. There are posts which answer further questions about this “new” modality. If you want further information or just care to share your thoughts, please leave a comment and I will get back to you.
In retrospect, I believe that the ability to assist others through their healing process depends on the practitioner rather than the modality. If someone is able to authentically hold space and presence, to kindly accept whatever their clients are manifesting and to connect to the client’s inherent healing plan (which dwells within each of us), then it really does not matter what modality they use – some form of relaxation and healing can certainly occur. Therefore, when I mention seeing people burn out above – I am not blaming traditional Reiki, rather I am blaming a lack of awareness of what is needed to practice quality self care. And this is what I seek to remedy with Metta Reiki. The healing journey lasts a lifetime and we are continuously growing. May we be kind and gentle to ourselves along the road and as a result, make lasting progress.

I’m fascinated by the diverse range of views and opinions. Who’s your “go to” guy?
Hi Olga,
I am blessed to have many quality teachers. My “go to” guys would have to be Drupon Thinley Ningpo, Khenpo Tsultrim Tenzin, Khenchen Rinpoche, Konchog Gyaltsen, Hun Lye and Julie Henderson. Thanks for commenting.
